A volcano has erupted on Indonesia's western island of Sumatra, killing at least 11 people, officials have said.
Mount Sinabung, which has been active with low-level eruptions for months, spewed clouds of hot ash into the air, engulfing nearby villages.
Emergency official Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said a group of schoolchildren on a sightseeing trip were among the dead.
The volcano began to rumble last September after being dormant for three years.

Indonesia's Mount Sinabung volcano erupted and killed at least 11 people on the western island of Sumatra on Saturday, the first time it is known to have claimed any lives, a senior government official said.
The volcano has becoming increasingly active in recent months, regularly spewing columns of ash several kilometres into the air. The government has evacuated tens of thousands of residents near the area.
"Eleven people were killed because of the eruption this morning and the number could increase. No evacuations could be made at this stage because of the potential for more eruptions," Andi Arief, a presidential staff member, told Reuters.
Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's most populous country, which stands along the "Ring of Fire" volcanic belt around the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

A volcanic eruption of Indonesia's Mount Sinabung has killed at least 11 people, including four schoolchildren, engulfing them in scorching ash clouds spat out by in its biggest eruption in recent days, officials have said.
Eight people were found dead in Sukameriah village, near Mount Sinabung on the western island of Sumatra, four of whom were high school students on a sightseeing trip to the volcano, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho on Saturday, the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency.
Three other bodies were recovered from the village later in the afternoon and were taken to hospital for identification, Nugroho added.

I'm glad they evacuated so many people. It's still a shame that people had to die, especially schoolchildren.
Country's a mess right now.
Not only volcano, we got flood as well.
Volcanoes scare the shit out of me.
Just another way for nature to show us that she doesn't exactly need us here.

The only ones that scare me are supervolcanoes. I'm hoping Yellowstone can keep holding off for a little while because that one is going to cause a hell of a mess.
Ash clouds probably mean that it's a Pelean type of volcano.

I say we blast our way down the the lava dome and relieve some of the pressure.
It's actually a common yearly occurence. They can't do much to prevent it.

Then the mole people will attack us.
Wasn't there a supervolcano in Indonesia that erupted 70,000 years ago that left only 2,000 humans alive on the planet?

Yep, the Lake Toba supervolcano. Huge amount of ash thrown into the air and caused a massive volcanic winter, leaving maybe 10,000 humans alive.
This is why Indonesia is the worst Civ.
The Eruption of lake mintoba begs the question. How does every modern animals including humans on Earth still survive the eruption while Dinosaurs end up becoming extinct after a meteor crash?

Wouldn't want to be in the road of that pyroclastic flow.

Dinosaurs never found jesus.
Not to diminish the deaths of those people, but I wonder how this will affect the world coffee industry, that ash is going to kill a lot of coffee plants

The meteor impact caused a massive harsh winter/ice age across the planet for many millennia, that kind of fucked them up pretty bad. Also, many of their prey also getting killed off, and possibly viruses afflicting them. Our ancestors (at the time) were pretty much rodent-like creatures that lived in underground burrows. Without dinosaurs and other creatures to prey on them, they had more of a chance of surviving. Other than that, many animals on Earth are pretty enduring creatures, except for when the odds are extremely against them.
Also dinosaurs are cold blooded, fucking them up when the ash clouds fucked up the temperatures.
