• Twitter Heartlessly Reduces the Character Count for Tweets with URLs Featuring 'http' by Two, Heavy
For Tweeters who need all 140 characters to deliver their insights and witticisms to the world, we have some bad news. Starting in February, the microblogging service explained on its developers blog, Twitter will reduce the number of characters from 120 to 118 in tweets that include a normal link beginning with "http." For special links that start with "https," which indicates the link is coming from a secure website, the character count is being brought down from 119 to 117. What this means for you: Every time you tweet out a link to an article or some other website, you will have two fewer characters to add your treasured punditry. The company in an email declined to share why it had made the change. But we'll venture a guess. Today, whenever you insert a long URL into a tweet, it gets shortened to a link that begins with "t.co/" and includes eight seemingly random characters. Perhaps Twitter needs to increase that number of characters to 10 to make room for more links in the future. Until February, let's let the Twitterverse freak out. In 2013, our little digital soapboxes will shrink by an inch.
SOURCE
The heartless bastards. Now how will people know what shit I took in graphic detail?
I still want to know why the character limit is 140
YOU BASTARDS! HOW DARE YOU!
I still want to know why the character limit is 140
It should be at a maximum amount of 40-50.
This arbitrary truncation makes me profusely livid! I demand this evil oppression from avian fascists ceases immedia..
I still want to know why the character limit is 140
Because 141 characters is TL;DR.
140 characters was already fucking puny I just don't understand Twitter..
"Twitter Heartlessly Reduces the Character Count for Tweets with URLs Featuring 'http' by Two, Heavy Tweeters Very Angr" can't tell if hit title limit; if not, well played :v:
140 characters was already fucking puny I just don't understand Twitter..
People are afraid of reading big bodies of text and plenty of people on the web have small attention spans, flick between tabs all the time, skim headlines, read threads a few short posts in before giving their uneducated "lolwut??" opinions, etc. In this very section of Facepunch only a few people actually read the OP past the headlines, which is why some of them tend to be a bit ridiculously long.

About a month back puush had to go from 4 random characters to 5 in their links. It's just how these things work.
I like twitter wars, how incomprehensibly fractured they are if someone is really angry.
And then everybody uses Adfly instead.
I still want to know why the character limit is 140
because a text message is (was?) 140 characters.
because a text message is (was?) 140 characters.
text is 160
text is 160
It was so that the tweets could include the username of the sender in texts. So if you recieved tweets by text, it'd be 140 characters, + 20 spare for usernames

Above 140 characters is 1kb. I don't see why that would matter but yeah.
It should be at a maximum amount of 40-50.
that's the worst idea ever what you just said is 42 what i said above is 52
I still want to know why the character limit is 140
Because the whole point is to post small updates.
Brevity is a virtue!
that's the worst idea ever what you just said is 42 what i said above is 52
But wasn't it meant to be used as a on-the-go social thing? like: "taking a huge shit." or just short witty jokes?
I hate how the web is getting increasingly limited by phones, like how the new YouTube layout only is centers on low resolutions such as phones
It that why a third of the page is blank white space?
It that why a third of the page is blank white space?
Most likely not, youtube has a seperate mobile layout and they have youtube apps on iOS, Android, and Windows Phones as well.
I've never bothered with twitter. I'm long-winded and try to be thorough when I'm talking about something. Nothing I say that has any real value can be fit into 140 characters. I mean, sure, I can tell people what color my food is or what I thought of Breaking bad or something, but who gives a fuck about that? On that note, 2 less characters isn't a terrible thing, I guess. You're already limited so much.
Brevity is a virtue!
Brevity is virtuous.
Nice work on the title.
But wasn't it meant to be used as a on-the-go social thing? like: "taking a huge shit." or just short witty jokes?
Twitter is "micro-blogging", the idea being you post short, to the point updates about what you are doing, or something you want to share. 140 characters is more than enough for most of these micro-blogs. Not just "on-the-go social things", though it does do that as well :v:
Eh, I still like Twit more to be honest.
