While the debate over gun control and gun culture has gripped the nation following a series of high-profile shootings this year, leading some groups to momentarily step out of the spotlight, scores of firearm owners have taken to Twitter and Instagram on Christmas day to show off their new lethal hardware.
Semi-automatic AR-15 rifles are used for a variety of purposes, including hunting and home defense — but they're also the same type of weapon that was used in the Sandy Hook shootings and a recent ambush in New York that killed two firefighters. (Of course, there are many AR-15 rifle variants and they're a popular choice in the United States, often depicted in media and popular culture; the US military's standard-issue rifle, the M16, is nearly identical to AR-15 type weapons in external appearance.) They're also not the only weapons that Americans unwrapped on Christmas morning.

While America's fascination with guns didn't just spring up this year, some people sharing their gifts online included a political agenda. As in the past, fears of gun bans or restrictions seem to have caused an uptick in purchases; reports from several local and regional news outlets in recent days suggest there's been a boost in firearm and ammunition sales, presumably built on fear of new gun control policies. As one gun store owner told The Baltimore Sun, "our numbers are too high to give you a quote. Obama and [Maryland governor] O'Malley have become our best customers, politically."
That sales boost appears to have manifested under the Christmas tree this morning, as people across the country woke up to new shotguns, rifles, and handguns — and then shared pictures of them on Twitter. The glee exhibited over gun gifts is a striking contrast to the outpouring of sympathy, horror, and anti-gun activism shared on social networks in recent weeks following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and a sign that the country could have a long road ahead in resolving one of its most deeply divisive culture wars.
In Australia, all guns are illegial, so could someone explain to me the logical reasons of owning an assault rifle? Because frankly, I don't see the point.
If you reallllly wanted defense wouldn't you buy a pistol? Why would you need a gun that shoots 40 bullets in one mag...
Clearly it shows really how many Americans like their firearms. Seeing as this AWB talk has sparked a lot of sales really, AR15 manufacturers are sold out everywhere. People are spending upwards of 3 grand for a AR that regularly costs 800 dollars. A lot of these panic buyers are completely new to gun ownership too.

Don't even start this shit. Really don't the topic has been beat to death in a dozen other topics. Is there a logical reason to own anything you might have? Is it necessary to have the best and latest tvs, computers, consoles, etc. You surely don't need it to survive, so what is the point right? Its called freedom of choice, people like to be able to buy what they want when they want without the big boys up in government saying so. Most people who have a IQ higher then a potato know that this AWB is ineffective and stupid. Just because one country does it does not mean it fits another country.

because they're cool
Collectors want them.
Jesus that dumbass in the first picture, this is why people hate guns.
an assault rifle?
Because the term "Assault rifle" is a very loose definition and the weapons they cover aren't even usually used in many of the mass shootings.
My family bought "a few" guns this year.
Granted, they are hunting rifles, shotguns, and sport handguns

But their crime and fire-arm related accidents statistics show that...
shit.

She is posing with a gun, not a big deal. She does not even have her finger on the trigger so props to her.

Duck season
Do people even need those guns. I doubt that most of the time they won't even use them, and just let them collect dust in the attic.

You don't really need one but guns aren't always for defense, Some people just like to collect or shoot them on a range.
Duck season
if you use an assault rifle for duck season, you're a retard.
if you use an assault rifle for duck season, you're a retard.
not if you live in an area where the ducks blot out the sun

what is the point in owning an automobile that goes more than 70mph?

you understand these things called collections exist where people own more than one of a given thing, yes?

Not even one post in and someone is talking out of their ass about a hobby they don't understand. First off, not all guns in Australia are illegal. Many are banned, but it's not impossible to legally own a firearm there. Second off, you can't just walk into a walmart and buy an assault rifle. To do that you'd have to get a class 3 permit, which takes tons of cash and paperwork through the ATF to get one, even then fully automatic weapons in the US (legal ones at least) cost 10's of thousands of dollars, it's not easy to get one. AR-15's and AK are not assault rifles, they're just rifles chambered in an intermediate caliber.
Owning a firearm isn't just about home defense or hunting. Target shooting and collecting are 2 very common hobbies in the US. Target shooting with an AR-15 or an AK rifle is a very fun and inexpensive hobby, and it's also a safe one if you practice proper safety.
Do people even need those guns. I doubt that most of the time they won't even use them, and just let them collect dust in the attic.
So why ban them?

Hobbies aren't about need.

Reloading is a pain in the ass, so being able to fire more shots at a shooting range is a good thing, and they aren't assault rifles. It's not much different than a semi-automatic rifle, primary difference is that it has a pistol grip and looks scarier.
Oh look another gun debate thread.
You cant even hunt with an ar-15 here in georgia. Its considered inhumane because it is such a small caliber that it takes 2-3 shots to kill a deer most of the time.

this is panic buying, not gun collecting

Where the fuck did I say I supported the ban?

This isn't a hobby, it's panic buying, hoarding and price fixing.

Technically, they could be fueling a collection via panic buying. You can't collect something you can't buy.
Well... At least now they have a gun to go after the head of the medical establishment that left one of their family members die without any dignity and avenge them only to get shot by security right after, like in many movie plots.

They're buying the guns they didn't think they should have bought before, typically because they were saving for something else. Now they're buiyng it because it may be their last chance to for several years, or forever.
guns are fun

Why suddenly buy right before the legislation?
Couldn't they have bought it much earlier when they wanted to actually collect guns, instead of buying now when prices are rapidly inflating?
gun and fun even rhyme!!!!
