Tom Greer said he returned to his Long Beach home on Tuesday night to find a man and woman ransacking it for cash.
The intruders knocked the retiree to the floor, but he managed to reach his .22-calibre revolver when they turned their focus back to the robbery.
Mr Greer told NBC Los Angeles: "I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run."
While the man managed to escape, Mr Greer said he caught up with the woman in the alley behind his house.
"She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," he told NBC.
"She was dead. I shot her twice, she best be dead. He had run off and left her. I shot her so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life."
Police said the woman, who was in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. They have not confirmed whether she was pregnant.
The couple were not believed to have been armed.
Hey kids, guess what?!? This is second degree murder, regardless of Castle Laws/Stand Your Ground!
What a fucking bastard.
The burglar got what she deserved. She was a terrible person to try to give herself immunity by using her baby as a human shield.
I'm not saying the baby got what it deserved, just the parent. You don't use your children as a shield.
This type of response from the homeowner should be expected.
He didn't know if they had guns, plus he can stand his ground according to US laws.
They're both shit, the burglars should not have burgled him in the first place.
But he should not have gone after them when they ran.
I'm always torn when reading of stuff like this. on one hand, they did break into his house, but on the other hand, I don't think taking another persons life who doesn't fight back is justified, especially when pregnant.
I don't feel that anyone were right in this situation

Oh man, you have one dark sense of logic.
This man sounds legitimately bloodthirsty, she gives up and you fucking shoot her anyway? Jesus...

And the baby got what it deserved too?

how to completely lose touch with reality 101: someone not wanting to die means they deserve to die
Castle doctrine/stand your ground only apply when your life is being threatened. Once there is no threat to your life, killing the person is just murder.

have some mercy man. how about we just cut off her hands and let her go? maybe a few lashes but dang. murder, huh
This man sounds legitimately bloodthirsty, she gives up and you fucking shoot her anyway? Jesus...
If local morning radio shows are to be believed, one of the them here in Southern California was talking about how the old man had gotten the shit kicked out of him and his shoulder broken by the couple as they were trying to escape the house.
I'm not saying that shooting fleeing perpetrators from a crime scene is justified, but it is easy for me to see why he did it if that is true.
I'm all for using your guns to stand ground and drive intruders out of your home, but as soon as theyre off the property this kind of stuff is best left to the police. It always sickens me when people impose their own sense of vigilante justice instead of directing the case to the proper authorities.
And the baby got what it deserved too?
Pretty sure it was still a fetus.
I'm not taking out the blame from the guy, though. Shooting to kill someone who isn't posing a threat to you anymore and is asking for mercy is just evil.
And the baby got what it deserved too?
It is not sure if she was pregnant at all.
For all we know, she could have made up the fact that she was pregnant.

Yeah, fuck that bitch, potentially lying in an attempt to save her own life.
The burglar got what she deserved. She was a terrible person to try to give herself immunity by using her baby as a human shield.
Do people like you really exist or are you joking?
I'm all for defending your house, your family, your shit, but if someone surrenders, you don't shoot them.
now obviously shooting someone to save your life is fine but lying? where the hell do these wastes of skin draw the fuckin' line...!?
This was a good doing for the world. If she was in fact pregnant it just gets rid of one more future thug-bitch out there. Anybody who thinks differently really needs a reality check. Anybody who's pregnant shouldn't be breaking in to somebodies home with their gangster boyfriend.
And the baby got what it deserved too?
The baby didn't have feelings.
Sure it's sad, but the parent's shouldn't have robbed with the intention of using their own children as a means to protect themselves.
You protect your children, not conceive them to be Kevlar
The funniest thing about all of this is the black guy just ran away. He didn't give one fuck about her.
Probably would've ran away when the kid was born too.

Why are people making it seem like it's so much worse because she was pregnant?
People get abortions all the time.

Same thing with the death penalty, you think death row inmates want to die?
No they don't, some of them are even innocent but the state puts them down anyway, and it's morally okay because its an ''official'' killing.

This thread makes me sick. An innocent baby died. Who knew what it could have became.
It's stupid to compare this to abortion as well. She obviously wanted to have the child.

Yeah but she didn't deserve to get gunned down. She was unarmed and fleeing the scene. Let the proper authorities deal with it.

well generally an abortion is a choice that a woman makes on her own instead of at gunpoint in an alley somewhere

You also don't know how many months of pregnancy she was in if what she said is even true.

How can you tell?
