A D-Day veteran who was reported missing from a care home has been found in Normandy after travelling to France to mark the invasion's 70th anniversary.
Bernard Jordan, 89, a former mayor of Hove, sneaked out of The Pines nursing home in Furze Hill yesterday after being told by staff he could not make the trip to Normandy.
Donning his war medals under a raincoat, the Royal Navy veteran joined his former comrades on a coach, before arriving at a hotel in Ouistreham, northwestern France, 12 hours later.
By the time staff realised he was missing the Royal Navy veteran was already in Normandy.
And, thanks to his great escape, Mr Jordan was yesterday able to stand proudly among world leaders and old soldiers in marking the audacious assault 70 years ago that cost more than 4,000 Allied lives.
I'm confused as to why they would not let him go in the first place.

Insurance, legal issues maybe?
I'm confused as to why they would not let him go in the first place.
Health concerns probably.

A lot of retirement homes are a glorified prison with staff that do not care in the slightest about your well being and happiness.

Showed them didn't he.
I don't want to put anyone in my family into a care home unless it's the very last reason because of how bad people have said they are over the years.
Fucking boss.

The dude is 90 and lived through Normandy and escaped from the home to go back to normandy
what health concerns? this dude is badass
Look at this smooth motherfucker.

Worth the health risks.
I bet he felt more emotion and had more fun in that one day in Normandy than the years in a care home.
If I were told I wasn't allowed to leave some 'home for the old' prison to see my comrades again, I'd do the same.
But instead I'd reply "how about fuck you?" first, then jump out the window on a vintage WWII parachute and Thompson in hand, yelling something about going to go fill some 'natzee krauts' with lead.

Really badass guy right there. I wish my grandfather was still alive, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the war really messed him up though =(
Must've been an amazing experience for him, sucks the care facility wouldn't let him go for it. Looks like a badass guy with a lot to tell.

He was always allowed to go, he just didn't tell anyone where he went.
The "not allowed to go" is just early media bullshit to make the story sound more interesting - you should have guessed.
In a statement, read by Peter Curtis, chief executive of Gracewell Care Homes, Mr Jordan said: "I want to thank everyone for their kind words and best wishes following my trip to Normandy.
"I am delighted to be back at home with my wife and the wonderful staff here at The Pines. I was never banned from going to commemorations - I just decided to make my own way there.
He wasn't barred from leaving the retirement home, they tried to book him a ticket with the Royal Guard who I guess was sending people over there and they didn't have enough time. Fuck outta here with that "wasn't allowed to go" nonsense. Read the article.

I watched my grandfather die slowly from dementia in his last years in a Senior Citizens home. Was terrible to see him waste his time idling.
Honestly If I ever got so bad I have to be placed in a home, I'll rather die.
