WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Transparency Caucus, introduced the Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically for Engagement or “COVFEFE” Act. This bill codifies vital guidance from the National Archives by amending the Presidential Records Act to include the term “social media” as a documentary material, ensuring additional preservation of presidential communication and statements while promoting government accountability and transparency.
“In order to maintain public trust in government, elected officials must answer for what they do and say; this includes 140-character tweets,” said Rep. Quigley. “President Trump’s frequent, unfiltered use of his personal Twitter account as a means of official communication is unprecedented. If the President is going to take to social media to make sudden public policy proclamations, we must ensure that these statements are documented and preserved for future reference. Tweets are powerful, and the President must be held accountable for every post.”
In 2014, the National Archives released guidance stating its belief that social media merits historical recording. President Trump’s unprecedented use of Twitter calls particular attention to this concern. When referencing the use of social media, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has said, “The president is president of the United States so they are considered official statements by the president of the United States.”

::incredible:
Covfefe discourse went from mildly amusing to utterly cringeworthy within roughly five minutes
but this one's actually good
:v:
Reminder that the Library of Congress is archiving all of Twitter, although they say they won't retain private accounts' tweets or deleted tweets, and that's significant because the President should not be allowed to de-archive tweets by deleting them or protecting the account. The Library's completely fucked up engineering a functional big data solution to deal with the Twitter firehose so far, but they're still receiving periodic dumps from Twitter.
A front-end that allows researchers, or anyone, easy sorted access to the archive is probably years away because it turns out archiving Twitter's hundreds of millions of daily Tweets is really fucking hard compared to a normal archive.
Someone's having a little bit too much fun at congress
Politicians once again right on cue with the internet humor. Christ, this one's making me physically ill.
Actually I just remembered Trump tweets from @realDonaldTrump, so would those tweets get archived? Would they only take the tweets after Jan 20th? Or maybe the tweets after he became president-elect?
IIRC Spicer said the President's tweets are official statements. If so, I'd certainly hope they get archived.

Talk about melodramatic. You're so childish, it's embarrassing.
It's a good idea but what a stupid 'look at me I'm hip' name
I don't think they're trying to be 'hip'. I think they're just making fun of Trump.
Goddamnit our government and military are the best at acronyms
haha, sick joke democrats! anyway, millions of people will be losing healthcare in a few months, but im really glad theyr'e focusing on the memes

Anything for a few donors, I suppose.

you do realize this is more of an awareness bill rather than anything that will actually get to the oval office, right
get some staffers to write up something that says "tweets are presidential communication" in more words, come up with a way to fit the context of bill into covfefe, introduce it, and now the stupidity of covfefe and trump deleting official commo stays in zeitgeist
haha, sick joke democrats! anyway, millions of people will be losing healthcare in a few months, but im really glad theyr'e focusing on the memes
what, you expect people who chose politics as a career rather than a sacrifice to help the people?
This is actually good, everything a president says on social media should be as valid as anything he says in person or on the media.
Anything for a few donors, I suppose.
You do realize that everything the Republican party does is to please "a few donors" right?
haha, sick joke democrats! anyway, millions of people will be losing healthcare in a few months, but im really glad theyr'e focusing on the memes
What the fuck are democrats supposed to do
Republicans are garbage and cannot be worked with and it's not like they can introduce a pro-obamacare bill that will pass

"People are literally only allowed to do one collective thing at a time"
This is the absolute highest level of banter.

You're getting harder and harder to take seriously as you seemingly become more of a characticture of the rights current mind set

Would you care to go back and have a real conversation about what it is you like so much about so many of these policies that will harm americans in the short, and long term
haha, sick joke democrats! anyway, millions of people will be losing healthcare in a few months, but im really glad theyr'e focusing on the memes
You seriously think that healthcare isn't top priority for Dems right now? They haven't stopped talking about it since Trump was elected
This guy seems pretty clever about this naming, he also made an act named the Mar-a-lago act to make a make a public visitor log at the white house and Trump's resorts. Giving his acts memey or topical names seems like a great way to get press covfefe and public support behind decent ideas that people would largely ignore overwise.
covfefe is probably the least funny, forced meme of 2017
When you need to revive a dead meme so you pass it through congress
