Pope Francis says everyone has the right to be baptised, even aliens from outer space, should they come knocking on the Church's door.
The Pope said Christians cannot "close the door" on anyone who seeks baptism, even if they are "green men, with a long nose and big ears, like children draw," he said at his daily mass on Monday.
"If tomorrow, for example, an expedition of Martians arrives and some of them come to us ... and if one of them says: 'Me, I want to be baptised!', what would happen?" Francis said.
oh im sure aliens will just be dying for christianity
What do they do if Aliens die if they touch water
Any race that has the technology to travel across the universe in any efficient fashion probably phased out religion a long time ago.
your missing the point completely, sure from an "educated" standpoint it's silly because it's just a ritual where they splash some water on you, but I think the point he's making is that the 1 billion people who follow the religion he leads should be open and accepting of people no matter where they come from, and that's not an exclusively religious concept.
What do they do if Aliens die if they touch water
We hire a washed up director to make a horrible film about it
wait
What do they do if Aliens die if they touch water
use oil or ash I guess.
if this thread turns into an argument about hypothetical aliens and religion i swear to god

it's 2014 and yet extraterrestrials still don't have religious rights
If another intelligent species managed to find its way to Earth, or if humans manage to find our way to another intelligent species, religion would no longer be a factor.
green men, with a long nose and big ears, like children draw
That's a goblin not an alien. You used to send people to kill these little guys back in the middle ages!

Man I wish, every vidnews download I get from back home now seems to either be the media complaining about how Great Wyrm Worshipers are pushing for their own monument outside the emperors palace or some kind of sensationalist spin on how some nutrient stations are now only providing Halal sustenance paste.
What do they do if Aliens die if they touch water
There's always an alternative.
oh im sure aliens will just be dying for christianity
Oh, they will be if they don't convert.
Any race that has the technology to travel across the universe in any efficient fashion probably phased out religion a long time ago.
Any race that has the technology to travel across the ocean to the New World in any efficient fashion probably phased out religion a long time ago. Oh, wait.
Exploration on any frontier is not justifiable as a means of tossing out religion; I don't see how a personal belief -- in this context, one that is accepting of all people -- in any way impedes progress.
Any race that has the technology to travel across the universe in any efficient fashion probably phased out religion a long time ago.
Or maybe they've found the true deity already. We'll never know really.
Any race that has the technology to travel across the universe in any efficient fashion probably phased out religion a long time ago.
That's assuming that their religion is anything like ours. If it never got much further than "god made all of us and told us to play nice", why would they have dropped anything?

I think he meant that because religions centered around a single planet become obsolete, and if no new ones were created during their "Space Age" then religion would have been phased out completely.
Not that it was impeding their progress to reach said Space Age.

Pretty sure he was just trying to be edgy.
What do they do if Aliens die if they touch water
Obviously this is a sinister plot by ol' Franky to annihilate the alien menace.
If another intelligent species managed to find its way to Earth, or if humans manage to find our way to another intelligent species, religion would no longer be a factor.
religions will just adapt, they always have

Unless they turn out to be some sort of highly advanced Space Mormon equivalent.
religions will just adapt, they always have
I'd be more inclined to say new ones will be created because when efficient space travel becomes possible and we discover new life I'd imagine our religions would splinter so much they would either die or new one(s) rise and become the dominant one(s).

Do you understand how hilariously difficult interstellar travel is? This isn't just some sketchy boat trip we're talking about here.
Any ships arriving at Earth from elsewhere will probably fall into one of the following categories:
Intelligent species that knows a lot more about the Universe than we do that has figured out how to break spacetime. Depending on the make-up of the crew they could scientists or explorers. If they did bring a """religion""" with them, I imagine it would be more akin to what Carl Sagan thought than your cookie cutter Christian.
A Generation ship full of colonists, which could be full of nutjobs by the time it arrives.

Why?
Why could such a group not manage interstellar travel if they had a firm set of beliefs about god and death?
You're making the assumption that because religion here has held things back (which is arguable), all religion must.

Do you understand how hilariously difficult travelling oceans were back when no-one had done it before?

I didn't say religion held anything back.
I didn't say religion held anything back.
Then why would you assume that a spacefaring race wouldn't still be religious?
[editline]13th May 2014[/editline]
Do you understand how hilariously difficult travelling oceans were back when no-one had done it before?
I remember hearing that it was more expensive to send a ship to the far east during the renaissance than it is to send a spacecraft to Jupiter today.
Then why would you assume that a spacefaring race wouldn't still be religious?.
Did you even read what I wrote? That isn't what I said at all.
I said they would have a much more passive outlook on religion and it's role in the cosmos, assuming that the crew were engineers and scientists.
-i am dumb-
