Merkel: Britain is wasting its time thinking it will get equal EU rights
German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday told Britain not to have any "illusions" that it would have the same rights as an EU member after it leaves the bloc.
"A third-party state will not have the same rights or even superior rights to a member state," Merkel said ahead of a Brussels summit Saturday on Brexit.
"This may sound self-evident, but I have to say this because some in Britain seem to have illusions on this point," Merkel told the German parliament (Bundestag).
She added that for Britain to think it could maintain parity would be ”wasted time” in negotiations.
She also made clear that from the beginning of negotiations, Germany would pursue Britain for its financial commitments to the EU, emphasizing that these commitments stretch beyond the time in two years when Britain is scheduled to leave the EU.
Good. Don't punish them, but do not give way. You reap what you sow.
Poor UK not getting special treatment like they usually do.
Really the best position the UK will possibly get is something like Norway, where they get to be a part of the trading bloc, have to abide by all their laws with very specific exceptions, but give up the right to vote lol.
If the UK wanted the benefits of the EU, maybe they shouldn't have voted to leave.
Just a thought.
But at least funding for the NHS is going up because of all that money being thrown at the EU that never comes back, right?

The country's treasury is so full of that nonexistent 350 million a week they spent before Brexit it can't hold any more cash! :vs:
Can someone explain to me how leaving the EU is supposed to put the UK in a better position and leave them better off economically?
I've never really gotten one beyond some vague notion of trade with South America which merits an explanation all its own and something something sovereignty something something taking control back despite the fact that, to my knowledge, the UK up until recently wielded a startling amount of power and control within the EU

You've pretty much answered your own question here, just add "no more immigrants coming in to take our jobs" and you're golden.

It doesn't. Leaving the EU just lets the ruling elite exploit the country and citizens for financial gain and power since now the EU can't stop them

Actually I'd like an explanation for that one too, because as far as I know the UK opted out of the Schengen area with only a few nationalities had lax border controls under the CTA and as far as I know they've never actually had that many immigrants relative to uh, basically everywhere else in Europe

BUT there's a guy at the corner shop down my street yeah, he's called Rakesh.
I don't trust 'em.

There's no rational explanation really. It's peoples' incredible amount of ignorance.

Apparently pensioners aren't too keen on Poles, I guess they didn't realize the Polish right to be in the UK is ensured by the same piece of legislation that lets them spend their retirement years in Spain. Otherwise, all other European immigrants are usually high-skilled workers or students who decide to stay after their education is completed, most immigration to the UK is actually from former colonies that obviously have no relation with EU, so they have pretty good control over their borders, actually. They weren't even hit too hard by the refugee crisis as the UK's refugee quota is comparably quite small.
Ultimately the people hit the hardest by Brexit are expats living the EU like me. We're basically at the mercy of Theresa May and the Brexit negotiators with very little say in the matter, despite me being sure that most expats disagree entirely with the idea of Brexit.
You can't have the cake and eat it. Ideally, the UK should remain in single market and EFTA, but if they want hard brexit, they'll have it. Best of luck to you, those who voted remain.
gee brexit being a shitshow who could've predicted that :v:

Just one of the many lies perpetuated by the leave campaign
