Indiana officers left woman naked for hours after force-stripping, pepper-spraying her
An Indiana sheriff has insisted that Floyd County Jail was following normal procedures when two male and two female officers stripped a woman, pepper-sprayed her, and then left her locked up without clothes for five hours.
Last week, Attorney Laura Landenwich provided WDRB with video of what happened when New Albany woman Tabitha Gentry was taken into custody for disorderly conduct and resisting officers.
The video shows Gentry in a jail cell with four officers, and two of them are male. After Gentry tries to stand up, the officers take her to what the jail called a “padded room.”
“Almost immediately upon entering the jail, she’s assaulted by four officers. They grab her around the neck, they grab her body,” Landenwich explained. “They hold her down… There are two male officers and two female officers and they forceably remove her pants, her shoes, her underwear and her shirt and bra.”
“Terrified and humiliated, she’s banging on the door asking someone to give her her clothing and someone comes to the door and says, ‘If you don’t shut up, I’m going to pepper spray you,’ and sure enough, they open the door, spray pepper spray into the room and they leave — and they leave her in there for 40 minutes, naked, in a cell filled with pepper spray.”
Eventually, Gentry was given a small blanket, and taken to wash out her eyes.
“She has a blanket draped over her shoulders, she’s paraded through the booking area in full view of anyone who happened to be there,” Landenwich pointed out.
Gentry is then made to stay in the cell naked for another five hours.
“Now this is a woman, who under our system of law, is innocent until proven guilty,” Landenwich said. “She’s charged and she’s charged with a misdemeanor crime that’s not a violent crime.”
The attorney noted that the video also showed similar treatment of a second inmate.
Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills told WDRB that officers “don’t strip search” at the jail, but they did follow policy by removing the woman’s clothes.
A written jail report obtained by The Courier-Journal said that the woman had been warned that “since she had resisted, threatened and attempted to kick an officer she was being placed in a smock and the females (officers) were going to remove her clothes.”
Sgt. Ryan Rainey wrote that he was forced to douse the woman with a “short burst” of pepper spray to “gain her compliance for the safety of this facility.”
Another officer said that her clothes had been removed “per jail policy.”
Landenwich told The Courier-Journal that she would file a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in New Albany against Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills and other officials next week. Landenwich recently settled a similar suit with the county over a case with Gentry’s cousin, Ashley Storms, who alleged that she was also mistreated after a misdemeanor arrest last year.
This is beyond fucked up and I (naively) hope the officers who did this will be barred from any public service forever
Even if that women had gone completely killing floor on their asses and thrown herself and her feces around, it wouldnt warrant this.

Watch as they get promoted.
Another officer said that her clothes had been removed “per jail policy.”
why the fuck would a jail have this policy, are they trying to get sued?
why the fuck would a jail have this policy, are they trying to get sued?
Most likely an abuse of a policy that requires them to strip search new prisoners.
I misread the title as "Indiana Jones" and after re-reading it I wasn't sure if I am disappointed or not.

Sounds more like policy for inmates with a very high suicide risk so they can't strangle themselves with their clothes. I don't really see any good indication that she was though(And the pepper spraying was way out of line regardless). Just someone arrested for a misdemeanor.
I recall a video like this a while back where some officers took a guy to a chair and restrained him, pepper sprayed him, and then put a mask on him as he pleads with them to stop because he can't breath. The video of that was pretty horrifying, so I don't particularly want to watch this one either.
Hey they do this kind of thing all the time back at home, if you get arrested here odds-on are that you get to spend your time in lockup without any clothes.
Just now actually they've asked the officers to stop doing this kind of thing, though whether it occurs in practice or not is something to be determined later.

no they'll get paid leave. That's usually what happens.
Of course the video states that it wasn't a warranted strip search, because otherwise this story would be useless.
She's under the influence of a controlled substance and she's resisting, there's literally tens of laws granting permission for this to take place.
Her being kept in the state likely to prevent self-harm.
Why does everyone think that being detained naked = sexual assault?

They'll be getting sent to their room to think about what they did
Sounds about right by American police standards. Must have been transfers from NYPD.
Who the fuck jails someone over a Misdemeanor... I mean really.. cmon

dude what
isn't it like standard practice that you're put in jail until trial (more likely, until someone posts bail)?

No... if its a Misdomeanor (except in specific cases) can be just a ticket.. court appearance is not required. They can just pay it and move on.
I wonder what her charges are. The article doesnt say

90 days paid vacation and raises for the lads and their service to the tax payers!
I shit you not, every city mayor and police chief.

no one said that
They'll be put on paid leave and we'll never hear of this again, as usual.
Cops here in Indiana are always notoriously horrible, especially in smaller towns like Alexandria and Fortville, they're an absolute nightmare to deal with. This poor woman.

Would you appreciate that? Five hours is a long time. Especially for something that she wasn't even proven guilty of at the time. What would you do in a situation like that?
The US clearly needs an independent agency that investigates police corruption
A written jail report obtained by The Courier-Journal said that the woman had been warned that “since she had resisted, threatened and attempted to kick an officer she was being placed in a smock and the females (officers) were going to remove her clothes.”
That's weird, I've never seen a warning in past tense before
I kept reading the thread under the impression this happened in India then suddenly realized what was going on
I am honestly baffled
Yeah this is standard procedure when you don't comply with police orders.
She threatened officers, resisted arrest, and attempted to kick an officer. The video then has some creative cuts which still fail to cut out the fact that she is obviously resisting as hard as she can. She is stripped because you can cow most people fairly effectively without violence by removing thebir clothes.
They only actually cross the line at the pepper spray. Even then they can arguably pepper spray you, they just have to render aid as soon as possible. Pepper spray is rough in an enclosed space.

fuck you
her bra and panties were housing dangerous weapons
these police officers were in danger and acted with best interests

The police in my area of Indiana seem like pretty good people. However, my mom works for a high school and she's been threatened multiple times and even pulled over once by (usually)drunk cops who were pissed off that their kid didn't make it into a sports team.
She didn't get a false ticket or arrest, though, the ruffian just cussed her out and then took off.

Her human rights have been violated, regardless of what she actually did she shouldn't of been treated that way especially by Police officers.
