The hunt for the killer of a Columbia University grad continued Wednesday in Panama, where a new report indicated the victim was strangled with her own pink beach wrap. The killer of globetrotting Catherine Johannet, 23, remained on the lam three days after her body was discovered on a remote hiking trail. Johannet’s attacker used her pareo — a wraparound skirt typically worn to the beach — to strangle the Scarsdale woman, according to local station Nex Noticias. Her body was discovered Sunday afternoon, three days after Johannet disappeared and a massive search for the missing woman began. U.S. officials said the FBI and Panamanian investigators were collaborating on the murder probe, although no suspects were arrested or publicly identified. Raids were conducted Tuesday in the hours before authorities revealed that Johannet was attacked and murdered.
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/slain-columbia-grad-strangled-clothing-article-1.2967529 I met this girl twice when I was in Vietnam. Knew her from a friend's friend. Really sad that it had came down to this. RIP.
Traveling abroad always increases your chances of finding yourself in a bad situation. It sucks that the world is such a dangerous place to explore.

I mean, if you visit dangerous places or go unprepared, then I guess you might be putting yourself at a somewhat higher risk, but travelling abroad is not inherently dangerous. Just plan your trip and take some basic precautions. If you do that, you're not at any greater risk abroad than you are at home. Hell, depending on where you go, you could even be considerably less likely to end up in a bad situation.
