Yup, defense contracts are an investment into not just military power but continued economic stability.
The parallel could be drawn to globalization and why being knowledgeable of Geopolitics is crucial in today's world.
Isolationism just doesn't work anymore.
so according to Vox the F-35 is bad because its more advanced than anything Russia or China has planned? Isn't that the point?
Vox is a little late to the party on this one. This could have riled reddit-tier armchair activists up a few years ago, but most of the things in the video aren't really relevant to proving why it's "terrible", and have been more or less proven as false. (especially when the video points out as bunch of positives the project has for the economy of several important states/countries)
The whole "F35 r bad, too much money!!!" meme has been dispelled over and over again, and is generally accepted to be going more or less as normal as the development of a bleeding-edge, multirole fighter project with huge (but ultimately achievable) goals and incredibly wide scope can go. I don't think a project like the F35 has been attempted before, the F-16 MAY come close, but still.
Oh, and this is always good for F35 threads.

Atleast in the case of the A-10 there's legitimate reasons why it is better than the F-35 for close air support.
But for a general purpose fighter and light bomber with stealth, supersonic flight and electronic warfare the F-35 wins out in the jack of all trades category.
hey guys the f35 sucks we should just upgrade the f14

nah i think the p-51 looks cool we should use those instead
Did Vox even do their research here? The infographic at 5:36 alone is just so wrong, look at this shit:

"F35A - two engines"

ONE. There is ONE engine.
"F35B - Needs a Lift Fan"
Why is this highlighted as if it is an issue? It HAS a lift fan. It is a VTOL aircraft. It works.

LOOK! there it is, Vox! I found it for you.
"F35C - Melting flight decks"
Okay, if anything is melting decks it's going to be the B variant. But y'know what else melts flight decks? Jet engines from every other aircraft, especially VTOL.
To top it all off, the narrator says "It's still inconclusive when the plane will be ready"
It is in service right now with the USMC and USAF
These aren't even minor mistakes, this is blatant misinformation.

I wouldnt try too hard to match up essentially jet clip art with a real jet Splungey.
It's the bullet points below them that bothered me, their clip art f35s don't even matter.

The points are hilariously wrong and in some cases apply to the wrong variant of the F-35

There's a guy who makes a decent series of videos that clarifies some misconceptions about the F-35 with sources listed in the descriptions.

I didn't know it used a lifting body. I was wondering why it looked... fat.

It can *all* be disproven. You know the jet blast defelctors on aircraft carriers that come up and stay up while the jet sits there for 5 seconds in full afterburner (With two engines) before launching? Those don't melt. They require maintenance, but they have their own liquid cooling system (And the newest carrier uses metal ones with ceramic tiles to dissipate heat). But we have Harriers and those don't melt the deck.
The F-35 is a brilliant plane, and when you see how long it's going to be in service, it isn't even that expensive. Why don't people complain about the 20 B-2's we have that cost about $2 Billion in today's money A PIECE that we never fucking use because they're so expensive we're afraid to use them. 2 of them are the same price as a full on Nimitz class nuclear aircraft carrier
