We all have our little theories about the strange ending to Chris Nolan's Inception. Now the director is finally speaking out on the ambiguous ending, but only to tell us all that we're all very, very wrong.
In the new issue for Wired Nolan fields a few fan theories on Inception. Here are his comments on the public's theories:
In the end you can hear Cobb's top topple over thus proving that he's not in a dream, Nolan's response: "This gives Cobb a base-line reality. But he's an untrustworthy narrator."
So a non-answer really. What about the fact that Cobb's children are wearing the same clothes in his dreams and in the climax? Plus they haven't aged at all? Clearly THIS proves that he is in a dream. Nolan's response: "The kids are not wearing the same clothes at the end! And they do age! We were working with two sets of kids."
But what about the fact that Cobb is clearly not looking at the top in the end? Does that mean he doesn't care if it's a dream or reality he's happy, so clearly it is a dream or else why else show that? Nolan's response: "The important thing is that Cobb's not looking at the top. He doesn't care."
Ok what if just the ENDING is a dream and Saito and Cobb are still stuck together in the dream world, so they've decided to build their own world together, where everything works out? Nolan's response: "Uh…that's not how I would have read the movie."
The phrase "leap of faith" is repeated over and over causing many people to believe that the whole movie is really an act of Inception. Nolan's response: "I don't think I'm going to tell you about this."

So there you have it, folks...
this totally made sense and revealed the entire ending and i understand everything now
I could have sworn those kids were the same age/had the same clothes. Only saw the movie once though.

Same here... I'll wait for the DVD to come out so I can double-check that, along with the ending
You don't see their faces till the end of the movie, that's probably what made me think that they were the same.
Ok what if just the ENDING is a dream and Saito and Cobb are still stuck together in the dream world, so they've decided to build their own world together, where everything works out? Nolan's response: "Fail gtfo"
Fixed.
So he basically said "ur all dumb, ur wrong, shut up nerds" and didn't say what was actually right.
he is clearly a illuminati puppet concerning the whole "leap of faith" thing
Holy shit hes totally right, the movie is an act of inception.
He just wants people to watch the movie again, to make more money i guess.
Tricky ma' faka
it's pretty clear the point of the movie isn't whether or not cobb was dreaming, it was to actually place that doubt into your mind that he possibly still was in a dream
everything else points to him being awake fully.
the point is the DOUBT
the movie incepts the doubt into youu
Inception was boring.
We must send in an extractor into the dreams of Chris Nolan and find the truth!
Didn't the costume designer tell us this already?
I saw the movie about 5 times in theatres, I did notice it was different/aged kids and the top thing. Still, nice to see how he thought of it.

Yeah, totally, I didn't enjoy any of those well filmed fight scenes with interesting takes on old concepts, and I sure as hell didn't enjoy class acting on many actors parts, and worst of all? It just made me fucking think!
The shoes were different, I read that somewhere.
Also, at any other point in the movie he looked at the top ready to blow his brains out. Here he just walked away, because he didn't care if it was a dream or not. It was now his reality, the only one he wanted.
Reality is what you make it

:psyduck:
Chris looks like a fucken badass.
I began to hate this movie after I saw it, because barely anyone actually got the fucking ending. Now every time I think about Inception, all I can think about is all the idiots who argued over whether or not the fucking thing fell, and how mad it made me.
Thank you for ruining a perfectly good movie for me you assholes.
20 bucks the guy HE thought he was performing inception on actually performed it on HIM.
:smug:
I probably shouldn't have read the article
i haven't seen Inception yet :saddowns:
I noticed that Cobb always had his wedding ring on in the dreams and in the end he's not wearing it.
it's funny because inception was only good if you couldn't understand it
it's funny because inception was only good if you couldn't understand it
lol that's so funny and true.

More to be revealed in Inception 2.
More to be revealed in Inception 2.
But there's not going to be a sequel
But there's not going to be a sequel
There must be a sequel where Arthur saves the world.

Quoted from the other thread, where Nolan talks about the Inception game:
(...) And that means a game is a higher priority than a movie sequel for him at this point. In fact, he told EW that he hasn't given much thought at all to doing "Inception 2."
:colbert:
I find it funny everyone spends time thinking about the ending, but no one questions the fact that two suction cups on a persons temples makes it so you can go in their dream.
