So it's just a massive chromium window that sits behind everything else.
Boy that sure doesn't sound like a resource whore for something that'll barely be seen.
I want this but just barebones opengl or otherwise for throwing together shaders as wallpapers

It really does rape my cpu, but its worth it.
Throws up a lot of Windows warnings though
What warnings?

a lot of Windows SmartScreen ones, one for running it initially, one for launching Chromium and one after that as well that I forget
Is there a way to have it disable when there's fullscreen windows or intensive programs running? Can't see myself using it otherwise.
Doesn't appear to work.

I assume that's what the "pause when gaming" thing does

wait ok it works, the ui is just a bit confusing

I'm assuming "pause when gaming" just means it pauses when in fullscreen though, sometimes I play games in windowed mode.

If you need the program to fuck off for a bit, i guess you can just right click and exit it via the taskbar icon until they add better options.

Could there be a way of mixing this with Shadertoy?
I want this but just barebones opengl or otherwise for throwing together shaders as wallpapers
That would be a fun project. Would be cool if it could just use a shadertoy link and work, though I wouldn't know how to incorporate that or make it work as an actual windows background ie render behind everything.
What benefits doesn't this have over Wallpaper Engine? Seems to me WE has significantly better performance and greater interactivity options.

I know this has "Pause When Gaming" but WE pauses when anything is run full screen as well.

free
Who makes this?
I can't seem to find much information about the developers.
free
I don't know, $3.99 maybe greater than $0.00, but again, performance and behavior doesn't seem all there yet.

That's a ton of resources for just pretty wallpaper.

Pay cheap, get cheap
And yet there is http://store.steampowered.com/app/431960 made by https://facepunch.com/member.php?u=439037
100% shameless self plug, but I made a quick and dirty open-source app that lets you set anything as your desktop background. (So you're not limited by being a web browser or an editor someone hands you.). Doesn't do any crazy rendering of its own, so it's as expensive as the application you're running.
https://github.com/Foohy/Wallpainter
It's rough around the edges, but there's a command line version called "wallcmd" that'll let you hook it up to whatever.
Video of it in action working on an audio visualizer (that uses your speaker output) as a desktop background:

shilling in a shill thread.
for shame.

Just expressing alternatives with different features, kinda figured this turned into a live-wallpapers-that-don't-suck thread.
