"It's possible that you may see conventional forces hit the ground in Syria for some period of time," one defense official told CNN. But the official emphasized that any decision is ultimately up to President Donald Trump, who has ordered his defense secretary to come up with a proposal to combat ISIS before the end of the month. The move would significantly alter US military operations in Syria if approved and could put troops on the ground within weeks. Until now, only small teams made up largely of Special Operations forces have operated in Syria, providing training and assistance to anti-ISIS opposition groups on the ground. Conventional units operate in larger numbers and would require a more significant footprint of security protection both on the ground and in the air.
Damn that crooked, warmongering hillary
But the official emphasized that any decision is ultimately up to President Donald Trump, who has ordered his defense secretary to come up with a proposal to combat ISIS before the end of the month.
With his eagerness to approve the Yemen operation despite the danger, it's almost guaranteed he'll approve this too. He'll probably just see the proposal and go, "Yeah, sure. Do whatever."
"It's possible that you may see conventional forces hit the ground in Syria for some period of time," one defense official told CNN.
Just like we've been in Afghanistan and Iraq for 'some period of time?'
To be fair, this is one defense official saying it could happen. He isn't even saying talks like that are actively going on. I will absolutely lose my shit if it does happen though.
If they go in I'll be counting the days until the Syrian government's forces are suddenly found to be funding ISIS or using gas.
I wouldn't put it past trump but it'd be odd considering his rhetoric and stance on "useless wars" in the middle east.
If they go in I'll be counting the days until the Syrian government's forces are suddenly found to be funding ISIS or using gas.
We already know that the Syrian military gas their own civilians.
I wouldn't put it past trump but it'd be odd considering his rhetoric and stance on "useless wars" in the middle east.
They were useless because someone else was running them. Because this war would be run by him, it would not be useless. Get with the program!
Assad said he might be amenable to that. Would you welcome American troops into your country? We invited the Russians, and the Russians were genuine regarding this– issue. If the Americans are genuine, of course they are welcome. Like any other country, we want to defeat and to fight– the terrorists. Of course with no hesitation we can say that. But– So you want American troops to come into Syria to help fight ISIS? Troops is part of the cooperation. Again, let’s go back to the comprehensive. You cannot talk about sending troops, if you’re not genuine, if you don’t have a clear political position toward not only the terrorism, toward the sovereignty of Syria, toward the unity of Syria. All these factors would lead to– to trust where you can send your troops. That’s what happened with the Russians. They didn’t only send their troops. First of all, there’s a clear political position regarding the– those factors. This is where the Russians could come and succeed in fighting the terrorists and say–
Isis recruitment spike when?
This would be another barbaric mistake we make in the Middle East if it ever came to light. The only way for ISIS to ever be defeated is by the Arabs themselves. The Syrian Government would have had the issue resolved years back if we didn't funnel arms into a fucked up rebellion that has resulted in the death and suffering of millions.
How would this work then? Isn't Russia supporting Assad's regime? Would we be doing the same with the goal of defeating ISIS, or would we be continuing to support resistance movements against Assad (and possibly Russia by extension) while also trying to remove ISIS as a threat to the non-ISIS rebel groups?
