Posting this before Mania is released tomorrow, surprised it hadn't made its rounds here already. Title isn't what you think it is either.
I feel like Sonic definitely stopped being cool right around the time Shadow The Cartoon Edgehog started slinging around an M1911A1 gunning down realistic human beings on his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Sonic is still cool, nerds.
After Pongraff (term coining both Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, who were previously writers of HTF) got on board as the current writers of the series, the narratives seriously got downright mediocre compared to how they were in earlier titles. One thing that always bugged me with Sonic's design (more in the 3D era) is that they have such gigantic eyes, but barely ever express with them. Since the 3D jump Sonic still looks like a disney character but doesnt move like one. Sonic could be a lot more expressive than he currently is from a design standpoint.
How do Sonics eyes work.
some people think the white is kinda like a fur around his eyes, but they've got eyeshine in more modern games so really they're just nonsensically paired-together eyes with no separation and the pupils do whatever the fuck they want
How do Sonics eyes work.
The white part is actually ski goggles. Don't tell anyone.

Okay i've figured it out. The whites of Sonics eyes are actually a fluid sloshing around in his skull to keep his eyeballs healthy, held in place by a thick transparent membrane. The pupils of his eyes are actually the eyeballs themselves, protruding from his inner skull like a crab, pushing against the membrane to see.
I really don't understand why everyone is excited for the new 3D game as well for anything other than Classic. The modern sonic sections just look like the terrible mach speed sections that have been done to death and... really aren't great.

But even the Sonic community is giving it a bad rep because it looks so average in gameplay even compared to its predecessors if not somewhat inferior, and screams of a sense of playing things too safe for gameplay while also being bankrupt in unique ideas. Sonic Mania overshadowed Forces in pretty much every single facet.
I wish they had never "modernized" Sonic's design, Tiny Sonic is so charming and lovable As for the games, I can understand people finding the original ones or the adventure ones fun, I myself find adventure 2 fun, but that doesn't change the fact that practically all of them have VERY poor game design, save for like, generations I guess

I wish they'd just scrap the modern iteration of Sonic and went back to the classic one instead of keeping them both.
I wish they'd just scrap the modern iteration of Sonic and went back to the classic one instead of keeping them both.
I don't trust them to get it right these days, the classic sonic model in generations looks less like what he looked like in the genesis era and more like sonic's pudgy little brother

There's something really creepy about the face he's making in the second panel. "Ay you talkin to me?"
it stopped being cool for you when you grew up and your perception of what's cool and what's not also matured A lot of kids aged 3~12 love Sonic and think he's cool, which they probably would considering it's a mascot aimed at children.
Thing is, both classic Sonic and modern Sonic have this "cool 90s kid" feel to them, but modern Sonic is way more in your face and annoying. In the first games you could see what Sonic's personality was just by his body language (ex: Tapping his foot when you didn't move), not by "cool" one liners.
This goes for the recent Dunkey video as well but I was expecting the posts in these threads to be a lot more constructive than what they've been. Don't think that many people really bothered to watch the video since this isn't about Sonic becoming "uncool" but how the series and its narratives became victim to bad writing.
idk when I want people to think I'm cool I just talk like Sonic from the animated series.
I always felt like it went off the rails when they started focusing more on story than on being a fun game. If you look at the Mario series, it's aged really well because they've always focused on polished, fun gameplay, with story and setting just being there to justify the action. When you take a goofy 90s mascot and try to also have grandiose plots about princesses and extradimensional beings in the same universe, it creates a huge dissonance.
Sonic's design is kinda ridiculous with these over the top cartoony proportions (his head is like 50% of his body mass and he has clown feet) and ridiculous vibrant colours. Whenever they try to make him do anything "cool" it just looks so out of place and forced, and it's completely impossible for me to take any of the "dark" stuff seriously. The design much better fits a kinda cutesy cartoony look, like Mania's animated opening video. Compare Sonic to something like Mario, where they've embraced how silly and fun the character designs are, so the games are mostly light hearted and vibrant, completely free of interspecies relationships and military weapons. The games feel a lot more natural and self-aware
