CCTV reporter Ning Hong paid a visit to the school where he found all sorts of magic in the air. Several kilometers from the school a great tower looms over the campus. It’s part of a three-building complex featuring a hundred-meter tall bell tower. We haven’t found a magic entrance to Hogwarts; this is the campus of the Hebei Academy of Fine Arts. Once finished, this castle will be used as a laboratory for cultural industries. It’s also likely to attract a lot of tourists. But this is just a part of a much bigger plan. The college buildings will be a collection of architectural styles from around the world. A number of the buildings on campus appear to be Chinese temples surrounded by gardens. The principal of the Academy, Zhen Zhongyi is a well-known calligrapher and painter. He and his faculty designed most of the campus buildings. “The first thought was to provide our students with a fine environment in which they will live and study. We also want a different way to conduct traditional education,” Zhen Zhongyi said. The unique campus buildings have already become a useful lab for students of architecture and landscape design. A pagoda and Taoist temple are currently under construction. There will also be a cathedral, a mosque and a modern art gallery with four helipads. It’s expected to take a decade to complete. The fairy-tale castle has attracted critics from home and abroad but Principal Zhen says its design is only broadly based on European Gothic architecture. "I’m not trying to copy the exact appearance of western castles. The idea is to bring in the essence and core value of western architectural styles,” Zhen Zhongyi said. It reminds me more of Anor Londo from Dark Souls.
It's really ugly to be honest.
The sheer amount of windows just ruins the aesthetic of the whole structure.
The sheer amount of windows just ruins the aesthetic of the whole structure.
It looks like someone used content-aware fill in order to extend the building.
There's like 3 bosses inside.
It's large, and in China, so there's a chance they'll skimp out on materials. If the damn thing collapses, and like 200 students die because of it, it's going to be ugly, but I'm going to yell "I FUCKING TOLD YOU".
Is there anything new built in China that's not completely kitschy?
Someone tell me when they find the Room of Requirement and the secret passage to Honeydukes.
I did the towers and shit but what's with the window spam?
When I saw the title I immediately knew that this was in China.
I feel like this is what European-designed Chinese-style architecture (is that even a thing?) looks like (or at least would look like) to any actual Chinese. I mean, it resembles the actual style somewhat, but anyone who's actually seen enough of European medieval architecture will know that this just looks wrong.

looks like it was just downscaled really poorly
It's going to be empty, I guarantee it. China has a thing for building practical and unpractical buildings and absolutely never using them.
I think the architect has seen one of the Harry Potter films, but only once and only a bootleg version.

Tacky as fuck. I've yet to see a modern Chinese building that looks good

The college I go to is divided into an old campus and a new campus, the old one being a priest's college, and it's kind of a legend among students here that the main building and chapel in the old campus was partially used as inspiration for the design of Hogwarts in the film Pretty sure the rumour is bullshit but it does kinda look like it.
as an architectual draftsman, this is almost an insult.
The amount of windows irks my trypophobia.
The amount of windows irks my trypophobia.
I wouldn't google that if I were you.
aaand they claim to not have any room for cemeteries anymore?
it doesn't look very safe
It's going to be empty, I guarantee it. China has a thing for building practical and unpractical buildings and absolutely never using them.
thousands of probably homeless people and they are more concerned with building empty buildings
It looks like what happens when you load a TF2 map in Gmod :v:
Is there anything new built in China that's not completely kitschy?
And then you figured out the problem with the news? Of course there are normal buildings built, you just don't hear about them because they're normal buildings.
Give it a few months and you won't even be able to see the ugliness due to smog.
