This mission was just mental

This video is ridiculously good. The story and action are better than most movies I've seen.
ShackTac is awesome
I would love to play with guys like these but I can't wrap all the controls and stuff around my head :C
Legit one of the most intense things I've ever watched, oh my god
best part is the end
"what about the body bags?"
I think the better part was when [sp]They tried to destroy the wall but ran out of RPGs, when it was finally taken down by an enemy AI trying to shoot at them with an RPG[/sp]

Or a certain triple-A video game franchise.
If I'd head Dslyecxi's reaction at 14:45 I'd have been the first to escape

how hard is it to get involved with shacktac? I've got a good handle on the controls and the mods required but I'm not quite sure how to go about joining a game
i'd like to join shacktac but i don't have the schedule to play with them

You've got to apply to get in first. I tried a while ago but never heard anything back, kind of bummed too, I'd try again now but with a full time job I just don't have the time to play the kinds of missions they do anymore.

They only take 20-40 people in every few months now, last recruitment cycle was from August 2013 to February 2014.
Hopefully gonna apply with a friend, but last time they had 1400 applicants. Chances are pretty stacked against you.

Pretty hard. Prerequisite knowledge of the ArmA series is not essential, but it's useful. It's about having the right attitude more than anything. As FruitNazi mentioned there's a relatively tight schedule - games are every Saturday and Wednesday at ~00:00 GMT, meaning around 6pm US. Saturday session attendance is pretty much mandatory, Wednesdays aren't but are encouraged none the less. It's a matter of commitment and personal investment into the group, not just "Oh hey these guys are having a game, I'll show up today and then never again for a couple of months". You get out what you put in to some extent.
There's more info on the join process here:

The best thing to do is put plenty of effort into your application, taking care to answer any questions put forth on either of those pages, send it in and then forget about it. Don't expect a response, in any case it will take upwards of 6 months to be processed. In the mean time, find another group to play with and get familiar with the games. There's the FP ArmA group but I can't tell you much about it. A popular one is United Operations which somewhat emulate ShackTac and often get relatively close to the mission scale.
A couple other tidbits:
You must be over 18
You must own or be willing to purchase both ArmA 2 Combined Arms (Or A2 and A2 Operation Arrowhead) and ArmA 3.
