It turns out that hardcore first-person shooters have a number of positive effects on the cognitive functioning of the human brain. We all know that videogames are bad for you, and that shooters are particularly bad, and that the Call of Duty series is far and away the worst of the lot. Well, maybe it's not "known," exactly, but it seems like a fairly reasonable proposition, right? After all, FPSes are twitchy, violent and utterly void of meaningful redeeming qualities. Right? Actually, no, according to cognitive neuroscientist Daphne Bavelier, a researcher at the University of Geneva. In a recent TED talk, she spoke about the impact of hardcore shooters on the brain and found a surprising number of upsides. Taken in "reasonable doses," games like Black Ops 2 can "have quite powerful, positive effects on many different aspects of our behavior," she said. Hardcore gamers have better visual acuity than non-gamers, improved attention and a better ability to multitask and to switch their focus between multiple tasks quickly. Bavelier's studies have also found that "training" on videogames can have a significant positive impact on brain functions and even more importantly, that once they take hold, the improvements last. The long-term trick, as she explained, is to blend the broccoli of education with the chocolate of entertainment; but in the meantime, you can take some comfort in the knowledge that all that running and gunning isn't turning your brain to mush after all.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120751-Science-Says-Black-Ops-2-Is-Good-for-You
It's news that video games improve reaction time and visual accuracy?

Activision bribes neurologists along with reviewers now?
why mention blops 2 when there are better FPS?
Except the fact that hardcore players become exceptional at being douchebags.
why mention blops 2 when there are better FPS?
Probably because most people recognize it, but I see your point
Activision bribes neurologists along with reviewers now?
reminds me of sugar cereal marketing convincing mothers it's nutritional
why mention blops 2 when there are better FPS?
Because money.
I wouldn't call black ops or the second or third modern warfare games hardcore.
Positive news in video games. Lets bitch because they mentioned the mediocre FPS game I don't like instead of the mediocre FPS game I do like.
why mention blops 2 when there are better FPS?
Because other FPS games move at a pace you can keep up with, unlike Black Ops which has everything moving at 2x speed so you don't notice that they re-used last year's map
Because other FPS games move at a pace you can keep up with, unlike Black Ops which has everything moving at 2x speed so you don't notice that they re-used last year's map
yeah, where the hell is my tf3 and tf4, valve?
My eyesight says otherwise.
I thought this was already common knowledge to people who don't actively despise video games
I wouldn't call black ops or the second or third modern warfare games hardcore.
why's that? if it's not too much to ask i'd like a graph of hardcoreness of modern warfare games 1 through 3 so i can observe visually the decline in hardcores.
Positive news in video games.
Hardcore gamers have better visual acuity than non-gamers, improved attention and a better ability to multitask and to switch their focus between multiple tasks quickly.
You could get the exact same benefits multiplied five times over by playing an hour-long session of Dwarf Fortress- what with the ASCII graphics, all the little details there are to memorize, and all the micomanaging/macromanaging you have to do. Hell, figuring out how to play it in the first place is a monumental achievement of its own.
I figured out how to play on my own, so what does that make me? :v:
A Dwarven prodigy.
I figured out how to play on my own, so what does that make me? :v:
This explains why my raciocination capabilities increased that much after I finally learnt how to sustain an auto-sufficient fortress. :v: Anyway, I'm not a hater of the series, but... I think Activison Is over marketing black ops II.
I loved when I was taking criminology courses, and professors would show footage of shootouts and things like that. He'd ask the class to deconstruct what happened (usually the footage were of things that happened quickly in a short amount of time) accurately, down to how many shots each person fired. I was usually 98% correct, and the rest of the class would be horribly wrong. I'm not sure if video games helped me gain awareness like that but it sure feels like they did.
"After all, FPSes are twitchy, violent and utterly void of meaningful redeeming qualities. Right?" SHUT YOUR CUNT MOUTH YOU FUCKKING LYI- "Actually, no" sorry I yelled
hardcore first-person shooters
lol
I think they mention Black Ops 2 in particular because of Strike Force missions. But really, you'd get the exact same effect from buggering up a round of any strategy game.
I don't know what you guys are getting all worked up about. It's no secret that Call of Duty is by far the most popular shooter, the most popular game even. Probably why they used that example. They didn't mention the best game in terms of quality. It's like a circlejerk of who plays better games in this thread right now. Just chillax. I'm sure people play call of duty because they enjoy it. Even if they are getting scammed.
I think they mention Black Ops 2 in particular because of Strike Force missions. But really, you'd get the exact same effect from buggering up a round of any strategy game.
They mentioned Black Ops 2 purely because it was a huge, recent launch and is an FPS.
It's news that video games improve reaction time and visual accuracy?
Let's be honest here, the more the point gets reiterated the more likely it is that people who just see video games as murder simulators might finally work out how stupid they're being.
I feel like RTS and Strategy/Team Based games would be better for that..I mean, I understand CoD for reflexes (sorta) but I feel like there is better more twitchy games to talk about when it comes to that. Call of Duty isn't very hardcore >.>
Uh no rts games like starcraft improve your reactions, going around rambo in an fps is not gonna improve something.
