Quality content as always. An hour long as well!
The amount of detail Stu goes into and how well he presents it continues to be amazing. :joy:
I always prefered quake over doom. Probably since it was my first game. Cant wait to watch this.
The narrator has a very relaxing voice.
The narrator has a very relaxing voice.
Indeed. I always use the doom episode to fall asleep. Still haven't seen/heard the whole thing.
Every time he seemed to be summarizing and wrapping up, he somehow managed to go on for another 5-10 minutes before trying again.
damn, haven't seen any signs of life from Stuart for months glad to see it was worth it, just as I expected
So basically, because of Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake we have: - First person shooters - Several multiplayer gamemodes now standard in many games - Mods - PC as a game platform - The whole Youtube and Twitch game related video culture - Speedrunning - The whole fucking E-sports Whoa
So, the original Quake has no "true" sequels Since Q2 was supposed to be original IP for which they adopted the name, and every subsequential game is based on Q2, not Q1
So, the original Quake has no "true" sequels Since Q2 was supposed to be original IP for which they adopted the name, and every subsequential game is based on Q2, not Q1
To be fair, Q1 was never supposed to be what it ended up being either. Seems like quake was all over the place, with quake 3 getting rid of the story mode entirely (not counting story-driven multiplayer matches). But even then, they all still managed to turn out to be brilliant games.

In Masters of Doom, it said that the reason for the mis mash of styles was because each art designer worked alone and made their own stuff, mostly because they couldn't stand each other. Everybody couldn't stand each other. With Romero rarely taking the lead in guiding them, or the project, it turned into what it is today. Turned out pretty well for a horrible dev cycle. Anybody even remotely interested in any ID game should really read Masters of Doom. It's fairly easy to get online*
Was worth watching just for the mention of Malice alone. I was trying to remember what the name of the game was for years, that game was absolutely mind-blowing back then.
The "Gotta Go Fast" line during the speedrun segment was really the only thing unpolished about this whole retrospective, but that's only a small annoyance at most. Otherwise, RetroAhoy hits the nail on the head (no pun intended) once again especially with everything that Quake set in stone for the FPS genre overall. Wasn't even aware that Quake and subsequently Doom were the starting points for Machinima. Also, the recently announced Blackroom looks really generic. It being a Kickstarter project is also bringing some early red flags, wouldn't be surprised if it bombed nearly as hard as Daikatana.
I remember first playing Quake on my Dreamcast when I was like 5 or 6. It was too scary for me though. As soon as I heard the zombies moaning, I turned the game off.
quake 4 is incredibly underrated imo
I'm so glad he spent a lot of time on Quake 1's level design. That game is a tour de force in that department. Some of the most intense gameplay you can have in a singleplayer FPS. Shame no one really praises that.
I'd love a reboot of Quake 1
I definitely hope we can expect Quake to follow along Doom and Wolfenstein. Especially since they're both good.
I definitely hope we can expect Quake to follow along Doom and Wolfenstein. Especially since they're both good.
There's already Quake Live which is played competitively.
I definitely hope we can expect Quake to follow along Doom and Wolfenstein. Especially since they're both good.
It's not out of the question. Quake's logo was featured during Bethesda's showcase last year at E3 so it just might make a comeback
There's already Quake Live which is played competitively.
That's not even close to what I'm talking about.
Finally got time to see this, well worth a watch, while I nearly completely agree about its influence and long overdue need to be revived I really don't think its colour scheme should of been an influence in retrospect, its duplication has led to many games looking rather dull even when its not and ultimately does not age well. You only have to look at the stuff Nintendo and DICE did with Mirror's Edge to see how creating an art style with real colour can really help a game look distinctive and ultimately make it age better graphically.
I love how he dives into internet content/ comments from the relevant time frames. It gives a good look at the social climate of the release of the game
I definitely hope we can expect Quake to follow along Doom and Wolfenstein. Especially since they're both good.
Hopefully with Multiplayer that's not outsourced _______________ I've been slowly working on a screenplay (which will shortly be a feature length animatic for showing off) for some kinda quake movie adaptation for *way too long* for both fun and not for fun. I hope Quake gets a re-boot, but I'm also sorta worried since it's almost certainly gonna knock my shit :c
I feel like getting Quake 2. I have the PS1 version, and its kind of tough as balls to play, because console FPS = SHIT and you need to squint a bit to see stuff as you should, because everything looks kind of grainy as fuck, despite the better graphics. Yeah, the PS1 version seems to have better graphics than the PC, but runs at 30 frames only. Also has a small level before the start, unlike the PC version. Think I'm gonna buy the Quake collection tomorrow. It's 30 euros, which isn't that much for a truckload of games.
Quake 1 with lighting and texture mods is still a suprisingly fun game.
if they ever do a wolfenstein/doom to quake i hope it's not the Q2+ campaign, Q1 looks so much more interesting than the sci-fi stuff in the second game onwards
if they ever do a wolfenstein/doom to quake i hope it's not the Q2+ campaign, Q1 looks so much more interesting than the sci-fi stuff in the second game onwards
To be fair a good amount of Quake 1 had tech bases and sci-fi enforcer dudes too. But i've said it before, the Slipgate setup can literally go between alternate dimensions if they wanted to. Forget solely tech bases, hellish landscapes and eldritch horrors, they have the perfect excuse to let their art team go batshit.
Quake 1 with lighting and texture mods is still a suprisingly fun game.
quake is perfectly fine and fun without those mods though
if they ever do a wolfenstein/doom to quake i hope it's not the Q2+ campaign, Q1 looks so much more interesting than the sci-fi stuff in the second game onwards
John Carmack said once that Quake 2 story arc is done and if id ever makes another Quake game it would be more in the spirit of the original and lovecraftian stuff. I don't have a link to that article, and Carmack doesn't even work there anymore.
