Awesome build, these fellas really took it to the next lvl with this one.

Also, he didn't really have a signature blade, he just used whatever he could find.

That was badass that [sp]they actually broke it and reforged it. [/sp]

Is it normal for swords to bend like this when you hit something hard or is that because of sub-standard materials or something else?

AFAIK, yes, it's normal. A sword that is perfectly solid, is incredibly brittle and will break. The bending of the blade is actually what makes it more durable, and stronger than you'd think.
It's actually called Anduril when reforged but still awesome.
Something about them doing this entire thing using old tools is just really awesome [sp]but must have been ridiculously tedious[/sp].
I wonder how many days it took to do all of this.

"You must bend like the reed in the wind. Or something." - probably some Chinese/Japanese philosopher

Essentially something with some give and flex to it is gonna last longer than a solid piece of metal. Kinetics.

[sp]I take it you didn't watch the video yet[/sp]

Hit something with a steel bar and you will feel the force going through your hands and it can be very painful. Do the same with a wooden stick and the effect is lessened greatly. If you feel less force it also means the sword has to deal with less force, thus making it last longer.

I did watch the video and I was referring to the title of the post: "Aragorn's sword - Narsil". It should either be "Aragorn's sword - Anduril" or "Elendil's sword - Narsil". Not that it really matters.

Apparently to you it does. [sp] They even made mention of the fact that they were leading us on and did a whole second name slate for the second half of the video reforging it and regardless, it's still rightfully Aragorn's iirc and still Narsil before it's reforged[/sp] so clearly if you DID watch it, you didn't pay attention at all.
Funny how people take the time to post or comment without watching first.
We will mix up stuff like this on purpose for awhile and see how many we can catch! :D
Amazing build. Loved the book quote at the end too.
this episode is the story of my life.. using mostly hand tools because I can't afford the big stuff (power hammers, belt grinders, wheel grinders, drill presses etc.).. although for a start I have an anvil and an okay forge.

To the best of my knowledge, the middle of the sword is typically a little softer and more flexible, while the edges are harder in order to hold an edge and cut better.
:D my voice...

Behind that there are insane amount of material sciences there, and that is just downright amazing. If you watch it completely, where [sp] Sauron broke the sword by using her (?) mace, they tell us about the importance of tempering, which is to heat the steel to a temperature and hold it. The steel microstructure will reorganize itself to a more ductile form, decreasing brittleness but it also decreases compressive strength. [/sp]

Yep, you are correct, it's called differential heat treatment
Why do these videos always have horrible music and cheesy special effects, I just want to watch someone forging a sword without having my ears bleed from noisy metal and dubstep and get eye cancer from all the ~le badass flame effects~
I can't even find a single special effect in the video ??? Those sparks are real dude.
Also if you have a gripe about the music, just kick on some classical music and watch men beat hammers into ingots muted if that's what you want.
Perhaps I should have said the video editing in general. The part where they introduced the two hosts had sparks flying in the background and the two guys crossing their arms dramatically and putting on a serious face. The narration sounded like it was a documentary about the end of all days.
This kind of editing is found in American things in general where everything is flashy, over-the-top and made to look ~hardcore~. American box art is a shining example.
Also, I would have muted it but the voiceovers were actually informative and I wanted to hear them talk about the process.
Kerry Stagmer is a facepuncher. Go home, everyone he wins.

It's a show, of course they're going to try and make it look good and exciting to draw in people. And the slight against Americans is extremely unnecessary.

There really are no visual special effects used. This what we do everyday for work, not always with fancy materials but swords are how we make a living.
As for the audio and music, that is left up to the editors and the producer. They know how to draw in those who like the entertainment factor. Thankfully they allow us to put in some serious work and not make it just another fluff build show.
I remember when FacePunch was just a sidescroller idea of Garry's. I was pretty surprised to come back to these forums and see that they had just massive growth.
Do you sell swords? Just curious!
