I think we can all agree that Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising has the best animations, perhaps tied with ARMA 1
delta force: black hawk down is fucking amazing. never has a game made me so terrified of RPGs
Man some of those sounds were so fucking weak
especially Warface at 1:45, christ. Then compare it Squad immediately after it
So... why does every COD developer say that their gun sounds are accurate, then puts it at like, 2% of the actual sound quality and volume.
Every gun in that entire franchise sounds like shit.

The one at 5:01 sounds fine
I liked Killing Floor 1's the most. Sounds and anim are so satisfying. Especially the sounds.
why do some of these models look so huge what the heck

And the shells
sniper ghost 3's beretta annoyed the shit out of me. look how long the slide stays back and how slow it is. i dont think a lot of these animators are really taking how fast the slide moves into consideration...
The fucking shells in Rainbow Six Vegas hitting the ground are louder than the shots themselves.
My favorites as far as sound probably goes to Battlefield 2, Killing Floor, and Payday 2.

How does it compare to Insurgency?

Remember that this is the game where in promotional material the sniper rifle fires the casing with the bullet. Don't know if they were smart and corrected that for launch however.

I liked the pistol animations in delta force games tbh
they're just so simplistic and responsive it kinda feel like youre pulling some jason bourne shit

Because real gun sounds don't record or play back well due to the inherent extremes involved. It's why the practice of messing with gun sounds in post, or just making up sounds is so common. Although unfortunately, not as common as it used to be.
Honestly when I hear somebody say that they're using real gun sounds for their guns it turns me off a bit because there's just not much variety in it, and it all tends to sound like any other game that bases their gun sounds heavily off of recordings. I love it when games half make up sounds. Bad Company was really good about this, with all of its guns sounding completely unique. Call of Duty 1 and Medal of Honor Allied Assault both had amazing gun sounds as well. Each gun had its own personality.

The M9 is a big gun. I was more surprised at how tiny it looked in some games.
Can anyone explain why the examples were ordered like this? I can't find any pattern.

Agree'd 100%. Honestly, you can't really replicate close-up gun shots anywhere close to "accurately" other than having 140+dB immediately blowing out your ear drums followed by a whole bunch of tinnitus. If anything, the environment you are shooting in creates and affects the sound more so than the gun itself. To me, gun shots without ear pro sound like an instantaneous pop and then purely ringing ears. Gun shots with electronic ear pro sound like an instantaneous pop with a shitload of atmospheric reverb.
IMO a good video game or movie gunshot should sound meaty and like you are firing sledgehammers to get the point across. Recording a gunshot is like recording a loud rock concert; ain't going to get anything other than clipping and a few pissed off viewers.

It's all in the bass for bigger guns, or small satisfying cracks for smaller ones.
I don't get why so many games make the M9 so tiny
like it's pretty huge in most average people's hands

Low view model fov
Honestly.. I liked BF4's the most.
Insurgency's is best. All guns in Insurgency are top quality.
That Sniper Ghost Warrior slow mo slide cycle tho.

One thing that Battlefield does well and CoD does not is the reverb and "echo" from gunshots and explosions. It makes those sounds feel like something that travels for miles

ahhh that pathetic click of the m9 in Max Payne 1 is nostalgic in ways yo wouldn't believe

ah fuck i've never been able to put my finger on it. the only guns thats sounded good to me in cod were a couple of the sniper rifles because they do have that loud thud to them.
the smgs and pistols (and shotguns sometimes) have always sounded more like a fucking stapler than a firearm.
The M9 is a big gun. I was more surprised at how tiny it looked in some games.
I'm pretty sure the M9 model used in the CoD games is just a paper cutout of the gun.
I also totally forgot just how much difference the "War Tapes" audio setting made to BC2, it's been years since I touched it but I always had that setting on because it sounded top fucking tier.

I think part of the idea is COD is going for more of an action movie sound palette where all the guns make a distinct, recognizable sound whereas Battlefield is aiming for realism.
You have to consider whats needed for gameplay as well, if someone is shooting a gun in say, MW2; I can tell what it is immediately. CoD generally has smaller maps and is considered the "arcade" one of the two. Counter-Strike is a good example of this too, everyone knows the sound of the AWP.
I think sound design can get way too busy too quickly, and you have to take that into account when you're designing the game; Battlefield has a ton more going on sound-wise than CoD or CS ever has, being more like a war-simulator than an arcade shooter.
But related to the topic, there's something about Killing Floor 2's animation that felt so slick and satisfying to me.
