The Foreign Office is investigating reports that a 25-year-old British woman has jumped from a hotel window in northern India in an apparent bid to escape serious sexual assault.
And it's in the same region as that Swiss tourist gangrape too.
By the end of the year India isn't going to have a tourist industry anymore.

Or it'll turn into yet another Asian platform of sex tourism.
i hope no one decides that india is the rape capital of the world because of this. im glad she got away.

It certainly isn't (many African countries are good contestants for that sad title) but all those cases are certainly going to show India needs some serious reforms on many levels, starting with how rape is considered in society. The fact these stories are made public is already a good step forward.
Time to take back India

according to the u.n. sexual violence study in 2009, the usa has almost twice the amount of rape as south africa (95,136 to 52,425) and almost nine times the amount of india (http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/crime/CTS12_Sexual_violence.xls). in fact, usa has the highest amount of rape and attempted rape in the world. but that doesnt mean we all say that america is awful because of rape.
the fact is that when it is foreigners being raped, it will be far more reported on, despite it being just as awful as if it happened to someone native to the country.

Couldn't it just be a standard case of rape though? it's not like india is the only place in the world where people get raped
India, sort your shit out.

Think about all the statuatory rape that occurs here like 15+ years older girl has sex with 18+ boyfriend, parents freak out call cops then that guy is "pedo" the rest of his life. 80% of these cases wont be occuring in Africa or India because those girls parents be selling their daughters off young.

7,557 reported statutory rapes is a high number, but it does not fill out the 43k gap i mentioned earlier
please at least find some sources before you decide to post

It's hard to state how many cases of rape have occured even through this one month in Africa because barely any of them are ever brought to light.
Statistics are one thing but in countries with such poor communication like Africa they are pretty much worthless. Some of the countries on the African continent are pretty much giant black holes with nothing ever coming in or out, because of no urbanization whatsoever, civil wars raging around, etc. Even when there IS some way of knowing what the hell is going on in there, the extremely archaic culture of most countries will be enough to completely muffle any case of rape, rendering statistics blind and pointless.

if you read the study, you'd see that it wasn't based just on officially reported cases. it is a metastudy that incorporates many different statistics. please read it and then come back
Thee only reason it's been so prevalent is that they're foreigners. That is the sole reason that there's been so much media coverage on the occurences

Then what ? A bunch of people going around Africa asking who was raped and when is still not going to be enough to give the exact number of rapes that have occurred in one country. It's extremely rare to have a good testimony from an African rape victim because most of them are pressured into not talking about it, are never given an opportunity to speak it out, or are killed after being raped. The very few witnesses we have of these rapes have very often described a society pretty much entirely based on rape, which is made worse by civil wars and such. Every single time there is an inner conflict in some African country, you can be assured the leaders of each faction will sequestrate and repeatedly rape at least one woman. It's almost traditional in some areas.

What about that one case a few months ago of a local who got gangraped and killed in a bus ? She wasn't a foreigner, and it's her case that started all of his shitstorm. Thankfully this will lead somewhere. People have to speak out against this or else nothing will ever happen.

you still havent read it? it is based on not only official statistics, but independent studies. all you know is what you've heard in the news and seen in film. where is your evidence for this so called infomation black hole? the country i compared it to was south africa (the country), not africa (as in the second largest, second most populous continent in the world with 54 countries, south africa included) . the study isn't exact, that is obvious, but i urge you to read it and do some research (and site it) before you continue to tell me what the traditions of factions of African factions.

You know what, I don't even have to argue about this at all because your study is based on south africa, while I talked about the entire continent.

Uhh, you realise the USA is much much bigger than South Africa right?

the study isnt even based on south africa, it's based on the entire world and has statistics for every country
the study isnt even based on south africa, it's based on the entire world and has statistics for every country
Then why did you use South Africa as comparison while I didn't even talk about that one country in particular ?
Uhh, you realise the USA is much much bigger than South Africa right?
per 100,000 people, america has 27.3 rapes. south africa (with a population about 5 times smaller than america) has 15.6

i used india (the very country in question) too, you decided that i was wrong because you said africa is a black hole for rape statistics. india isn't even in asia.
i used south africa as it is often said to be abundant with rape, and as an example of how what people think is often factually wrong.
why do people think this is something new
there's always been lots of rape in india
it's just that no one cared to write news about it until now
the only reason there are more news stories about rape in india and south africa than there are in the usa is because of the xenophobia behind western media and our way of thinking. we should not encourage this way of thinking.

and the fatal gang rape a few months ago.
it's good it's getting coverage though, it highlights the issue.
india isn't even in asia
What?
What?
Holy crap I didn't even see that part of his post.
Pure gold right here.

Almost a third of Indian ministers and members of the parliament themselves face rape, murder and other serious criminal charges. The severity of corruption and nepotism that plagues the Indian government is ridiculous. It's a pseudo-democratic country ran by ruling families.
