[release]Letting in a goal produces more emotion than killing an enemy because sport is closer to real life than shooting someone, say psychologists.
Shoot ’em up games have come under criticism for causing violent responses in gamers.
A 24-year-old Dutchman who killed six people and wounded 17 in a shooting spree last month had been playing Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it was reported.
However, the theories about violent games could be wrong, according to Dr Simon Goodson and Sarah Pearson of Huddersfield university.
They measured the heart rate, respiration and brain activity of 40 male and female participants who were randomly allocated to play either an XBox 360 violent video game or a football game.
The results showed killing someone caused little brain activity but conceding a goal or foul caused high activity.
‘As participants reacted with more agitation during the football game it seems the effects of violent video games have been misrepresented in the past,’ said Dr Goodson, whose research is presented this week to the British Psychological Society’s annual conference in Glasgow.[/release]
And this explains why we have so many more football hooligans than WoW hooligans.

You mean... just like the rest of 18-24 year olds in the entirety of the western world?
Fucking hell.
I have punched people over a game of Madden. So yeah
[editline]5th May 2011[/editline]
all the while screaming "you fucking whore"
I can attest to this, Fifa and pro Evo have caused many a war when the family gets together.

*12-24
Me and a few hallmates played NFL Blitz last year on our N64 for nostalgia and fun. But it went from a fun game to testosterone filled rage games where people would be on the edge of breaking the old controllers in their hands. Shit got way too intense, so we went back to Super Smash Bros. Melee. :v:

This makes a lot of sense when you think about how much violence is displayed in media today. Most people are probably desensitized to killing and such.

*8-24 as it (too) often appears
Most multiplayer non-violent games make you violent anyway.
e.g. Mario Party
"Further tests shown that the "star swap" power up in Mario Party had effects similar to a heavy dose of PCP."
Party games cause more rage than violent games. Always. Fuck you Super Smash Bros.

I once punched someone in the face for purposely taking all my coins, despite having only about 8 at the time.

Guess who stole your stars.
fifafucks u up man, makes u mad
i rarely rage at fifa 11, yet call of duty makes me go insane
sue me
I play ArmAII, does this instantly make me a evil soldier that has had special op training that will take down the local business stores, or even go on a murderous rampage?
Fucking soccer moms man.
Madden 10 makes me throw my goddamn controller against the wall and go blind with red.
I can attest to this.
Whenever I'm loosing at golf in Wii Sports Resort, I start cursing out the game...
I can't find this research anywhere. The university's sites link to research about a driving game being more emotional than Gears of War, but that's pay-to-view. Nothing about football games and not the actual data anywhere
edit: Oh, missed that part

I suppose that might be why it's nowhere to be seen
i never smashed my keyboard or threw a controller EVER
It isn't the Madden games that cause this sort of behavior, but the opposite. Rather than Madden causing people to become aggressive, you get a lot of the aggressive football fans who play Madden. It's part of the bro mentality, and the people who get violent over Madden are probably the same people who get violent when their favorite sports team loses.
I approve this. Fifa online can change a man...
I play both shooters, and FIFA online, and have done for years. I get much, much more frustrated at FPS games.
This report it saying it more about the emotion of killing someone versus a goal though. Rather than being spawn killed versus giving away a penalty. It's a big difference.
