OK, the world didn’t end, but PSY’s Gangnam Style video did become the first YouTube video to rack up one billion views today. Call it # ApocoMayanStyle! I haven’t been able to get a firm number, but the overall “halo effect” of the video, including all of the covers, parodies and other responses along with other videos of the song by PSY himself, must be over 2 billon views at this point.
The latest reaction video to get wide attention comes from Nasa’s Johnson Space Center (see Johnson Style video above.) This motivational hymn to to STEM education is surprisingly well done, turning the refrain of “sexy lady,” into “science daily, it’s amazing.”
I have been on this story since almost the beginning (my complete set of Gangnam Style postshere.) I was tipped off by Max Fisher’s story in The Atlantic, Gangnam Style, Dissected: The Subversive Message Within South Korea’s Music Video Sensation, that there was more to the video than a catchy beat. I went straight to Rap Genius and posted the complete lyrics so everybody could see that the song was actually a scathing critique of consumerism and materialist elitism in the posh Seoul neighborhood. (the song has now been extensively annotated on the site.) Some critics, like Bill O’Reilly, have called the sone “meaningless,” but that’s only if you don’t bother to try to find out what it means!
People have been keeping track of the video’s progress on BillionCountdown.com. I’m going by their count since YouTube’s is frozen! (UPDATE: Sneaky devils! After it hit one billion they swapped the link for porn! I have removed the link, here. Please don’t go there!) On November 23, YouTube analytics company ChannelMeter predicted (it turns out a bit optimistically) that Gangnam would hit a billion “on or before Dec. 12, 2012.” Obviously, as we have gotten closer to the mark the predictions have gotten more accurate!

It's a great song, very catchy however just gets overplayed
well deserved imo
It's just a big hype seller, then it goes away like most.
