They were pushing the "New direction" worryingly hard.
I disagree.
Jesus christ can they stop making new species and use stuff already in the fucking lore!!!
hope the music isn't bad like the last one.

Yeah! I hate tauntauns and wampas! The universe should only be filled with species from Tatooine, and only those shown in Episode IV!

What's Gwendoline Christie doing there?

Captain Phasma? She was in 7.

[sp]I guess I kinda assumed she fucking died when the planet exploded? If she's in this one, I hope they at least do something interesting with her (or kill her off immediately), because she may as well not have been in the 7th movie at all. Had nothing to and seemed really superfluous.[/sp]

Shes a bigger character in this one then the last one.
She is also getting a comic (and a novel). The comic explains how she got off Starkiller in Ep7.

The galaxy has thousands if not millions of species.
Seeing only ones you know makes little sense.

Bit silly that it's a comic that explains that tbh.
Also she's going to have to do some pretty cool shit to get over the total and utter humiliation of the first episode, where she did nothing at all, acted like a complete and total coward when she actually did something giving up almost completely and through her actions let the new rebellion win pretty much, like jeez, what a putz.
[editline]edit[/editline]
She's like a worse Boba Fett in that regard, because at least Boba Fett stayed cool and was actually useful (Despite barely doing anything) until his eventual demise at the hands of a blind Han Solo accidentally killing him.
She gets a new weapon, and Believe she actually removes her helmet.

Or it doesn't matter to the plot.
i don't know what you mean by "it", but i'd say it matters to the plot if a character that's apparently left trapped on a space station that proceeds to explode suddenly shows up in a sequel with no explanation as to how that character survived said explosion. that leaves the viewer asking questions that should've been answered without the need for supplementary material. Snoke telling Hux to seek out Phasma before escaping with Ren would've sufficed

"It's classified"
Yeah, I don't think it matters to the plot to know how she escaped.

ooo, how fancy. :s:
Yeah, I don't think it matters to the plot to know how she escaped.
Honestly you are right, it doesn't matter all that much, it's the fact that as a character she was totally and utterly pathetic, she had almost zero character besides "stoic badass with cool armour" and even then that didn't show up much at all, despite being bigged up as someone of power and status, someone in control, she instantly folded when the chips were down and cost the First Order everything and then her character ended with a hilariously unfitting "Let's put her in the poopshoot" ending.
Oh no the space penguins are actually real. The leak was actually real.

I really liked Force Awakens but the ending really bothered me. All the other Star Wars movies, except Jedi, explicitly show the villains surviving. It's a reoccurring method through all the films. The shot of Palpatine at Qui Gon's funeral, Dooku returning to Coruscant, Vader getting his new suit, Vader flying away in his TIE, Vader on his Star Destroyer as the Millennium Falcon escapes. Jedi not having a similar scene makes sense as that was supposed to be the end. We are SHOWN that evil is still out there, and needs to be taken care of. But the way the Force Awakens ends, you only have that scene of Snoke telling Hux to bring Ren to him; we only get dialog and aren't shown anything. Plus, the way it's edited makes it look like there was hardly enough time for Hux to find Ren and fly away before the base exploded. Adding still the need for a plausible explanation for what happened to Phasma and it's disappointing that the ending wasn't handled differently. Especially when they knew for certain there would be an Episode 8, there is no reason for leaving things so vague.

I don't think anyone's asking they just raid Lucasfilm archives and only use old alien masks and prosthetics, but the fact that we're not seeing any old aliens beyond familiar characters from said races (Chewie, Ackbar, Nien Numb) is a bit jarring. Plus in my opinion an overload of new can be a bit off-putting. I saw some of the promo pics of the aliens in Maz's castle and my first thought was Farscape instead of Star Wars. And I haven't even watched Farscape.

Every featurette like this should have a focus. This was on the idea that the plot of the new movie is supposed to be surprising and the characters old and new are going to get interesting arcs.

Rogue One had a few familiar faces in the backgrounds like Twi'leks.
The amount of new stuff just makes the new films seem 'inspired by Star Wars' rather than an actual part of Star Wars. That's how I felt in TFA, and it honestly put me off from the rest of the film tbh. Just like in Rebels how Chopper needed to be his own brand new droid type (that totally existed the whole time!!!) when he could've just been an R5 astromech or something.
TFA is 30 years later, why wouldn't there be new stuff?
bit cheap to use Carrie Fisher at the end there
Not really, she loved the character. It was in honour of her.

I feel like the "new direction" stuff is a direct response to the argument that 7 is the exact same movie as 4.
