Yoko Ono Tweets Photo of John Lennon's Bloody Glasses
Yoko Ono has had every reason to lament gun violence since Dec. 8, 1980.
"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him. Yoko Ono Lennon," John Lennon's widow tweeted yesterday, on what would have been their 44th wedding anniversary, along with the photo of the blood-spattered glasses Lennon was wearing when he was shot by Mark David Chapman.

Ono used the famous image on the cover of her 1981 album, Season of Glass, but this time the photo was stamped with the message: "Over 1,057,000 have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on Dec. 8, 1980."
Several other tweets also had the photo attached.
"31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into war zone," Ono wrote. Also: "Together, let's bring back America, the green land of peace."

John Lennon could have easily been stabbed with a knife in the scenario of his death. If he had been killed with a knife, would the banning of knives be called?
Yoko is a bit hypocritical at times anyway, hypocritical enough to not be taken seriously.

The point of the argument is not that anything can be used to kill someone, it's that a gun can be used from long distances, while a knife is only deadly up close (unless you're some knife throwing pro, but those aren't common). A gun allows you to shoot multiple people, with you at a safe range from anyone who might interfere, without the victims even being able to react. If someone walks up to you with a knife, you might have the chance to defend yourself, and it's highly unlikely the attacker can take on multiple people with a knife unless they have special training.
I'm not taking a side in the debate, this is just a fact that you cannot ignore and it's what the whole argument is based around.

He is not dead.
He is spooky ghost.
She's not calling for the banning of guns, she's just raising awareness of gun violence, which is a perfectly understandable thing to do.

if knives are so efficient and deadly compared to guns why is everyone using guns for their killing sprees? i mean you would think with knives being infinitely more available and concealable than a firearm, and with them being so easy to use, and so efficient, there'd be mass school stabbings and theatre stabfests! (i swear if one of you silly motherfuckers mentions that chinese school)
the blood on the glasses have been preserved that long?

The picture is from a 1981 album cover. He died in 1980 so it's likely the picture was taken recently after his death.

knives are widely used in murders. more so than guns.

i think it's just a bigger version of the photo from season of glass, the yoko album that the article mentions
nvm that's not true the statistic is rifles sry. handguns kill a lot more than knives i think
Nobody likes you Yoko Ono.

Funny, her tweet didn't say anything about banning guns, you're just being an asshole.

Can anyone else imagine someone beating Cho's high score with a decent katana sword?
Fortunately, Yoko, the number continues to get smaller every year despite increasingly lax gun control laws.
Gun deaths are a fraction of what they were even in 2000, much less 1980.
CLONE HIM!

That is interesting, do we have actual stats on that anywhere?

i don't think the message was only about gun laws. she said "people killed with guns", which certainly includes warfare.
so yea she was probably making a larger point about violence in general.
Where does she get the "million" number from? Even if you count all homicides in the US (gun and non-gun related) up from 1980-2008, you only get around 300k.

She may have included gun related suicide.
gun-related suicides have outnumbered firearm homicides and accidents for 20 of the last 25 years. In 2005, homicides accounted for 40 percent of gun deaths. Accidents accounted for 3 percent. The remaining 2 percent included legal killings, such as when police do the shooting, and cases that involve undetermined intent.
I haven't looked at the actual stats though.

holy shit that bassline was stolen by stereolab for Emperor Tomato Ketchup how the fuck did i just notice that lol
I am greatly indebted to john lennon and his work for where I am in my life, and it has always been clear to me that yoko is equally as stupid as the logic behind this ad. as someone who is stricken with rage and sadness at the thought of john lennon's death, please fuck off yoko.

Last time I checked stats on it more people kill themselves with firearms than others.
For instance, the number mentioned at the end of the quote IIRC 20K of those are self-inflicted.
My dislike for Yoko is mostly because of all the Drama and stupid stuff like filing lawsuits over John's song "Imagine"... a song about no ownership and such. Hate's a bit strong, he loved her for a reason I guess. :downs:
Right, that makes sense to push this with an assault rifle ban as Lennon got shot with an assault rifle, right?
Oh wait no he got shot with a .38 revolver too bad.

Yes, knives are less effective.
If you ban guns, THEN, the murderers will have to rely on knives more. Right now they don't have much of a reason, but don't think it will stop them.
Also I like how you say this in relation to this "mass murder" of one artist, who got shot into the back by a man who he passed by.
The man was in ideal position to just stab him in the back.

I am all for considering and discussing weapon control, but this particular pulled out case has absolutely no relation to what the current issue seems to be nor what the currently considered legislative deals with and only is used because ~famous people~ are involved.

Hey man some people are okay with banning handguns
Hey man some people are okay with banning handguns
You know that just won't happen in USA.
"Together, let's bring back America, the green land of peace."
I don't have anything against America or anything, but lines like this which are spoken quite often for some reason always are extremely cheesy.
"Together, let's bring back America, the green land of peace."
America knows what peace is? The country was founded on war.
