The United Nations will launch an investigation into Syrian claims that rebels used chemical weapons against its troops, even as U.S. officials told CNN Thursday that initial intelligence reports suggest no such weapons were used.
The announcement follows days of claims by the Syrian government and rebels that each side used chemical weapons against the other, raising concern the ongoing civil war had entered a new, more deadly phase.
U.S. President Barack Obama and other American officials have said in recent days there was no evidence to substantiate the reports that rebels had used chemical weapons against Syrian troops.
But now analysts are "leaning hard away" from the notion that Syria used chemical weapons against its own people, a U.S. military official directly familiar with the preliminary analysis told CNN.
That official told CNN "there are strong indications now that chemical weapons were not used by the regime in recent days." The official would not detail the indicators but said it points to the preliminary U.S. conclusion that "weaponized chemical agents" were not used.
Because the U.S. has always been so great at identifying which countries have and do not have weapons of mass destructions :v:
Not like the US has a history of using chemical weapons.
Yeah, finally this isn't treated as wholly black and white.

Yellow cake uranium was found at the bottom of the Tigris river in Baghdad.
And I believe there were a lot of dismissed claims of trucks of chemical weapons leaving Iraq and going into Syria in 2003.

Except the last claim was used as pretext to invade Iraq, the US government stating that there isn't evidence of the use of chemical weaponry is the exact opposite thing they would do if they wanted to start armed intervention in the conflict.
Also, US troops stationed in Jordan have been training Syrian rebels in the usage of anti-tank weaponry, I'm sure there's plenty of information flowing through their lines as well.

The only reason the US was so ready to suspect Iraq of possessing WMDs was because Bush Senior and the CIA had FUNDED the weapons research.

"The non-profit American Type Culture Collection and the Centers for Disease Control sold or sent biological samples of anthrax, West Nile virus and botulism to Iraq up until 1989, which Iraq claimed it needed for medical research. A number of these materials were used for Iraq's biological weapons research program, while others were used for vaccine development.[33] For example, the Iraqi military settled on the American Type Culture Collection strain 14578 as the exclusive anthrax strain for use as a biological weapon, according to Charles Duelfer."
