To answer his question, yes, he does.
Some people don't know how much gay people think about this. It might seem kind of stupid and trivial but it's a big deal. The "gay voice" has a HUGE impact on how stereotypes are perceived in society. I'm very interested to watch this documentary.
I thought this would be a thread where OP posts a video of himself and asks the Internet for their opinion
I think George Takei is right though; there is no sounding straight.
I thought this would be a thread where OP posts a video of himself and asks the Internet for their opinion
I think one of the first threads I ever made on facepunch was that very thing.
Well maybe it's not actually correlated with homosexuality? Like it was just a bad coincidence it got caught up in that stereotype. Maybe it's some other thing. Also I find it weird how there's a "gay" voice for men but not for women.

There's some correlation, and we don't REALLY know what it is or why. That's what makes it so interesting.
Part of it can be emphasized to make it clear you are gay since gaydar is hit or miss and it just makes things easier. Its such a weird thing though, I've had people tell me they've always caught that vibe (it would explain girls in high school :D) and can hear it in my voice but I've never heard it myself and was always 100% confident I was straight until like two months ago. So not sure why I've always sounded like that, afaik I've done nothing to change my voice.
whoa now tim gunn doesn't like his voice? i think he has a great voice [editline]20th June 2015[/editline] i didn't know this was a real problem for people tbh, just didn't think people put that much value into the way they sound.
In many cases it's just not wanting to be stereotyped. Others it can be hiding from family or friends, or just not standing out.
I thought this would be a thread where OP posts a video of himself and asks the Internet for their opinion
I thought the same in the beginning too but then I remembered the "freakish nipples" thread and it was in the fast thread section

Also I find it weird how there's a "gay" voice for men but not for women.
It's how men sound like when they're trying to sound little more feminine or should I say less manly and try to talk more through their nose. It makes your voice smoother and higher. Compare how the "straight friend that sounds gay" talks and how the "gay friend who sounds straight" does. The first one talks through their nose and the second one does not at all. So it's not correlated to homosexuality as much as it's correlated to trying to have a less say rigid voice. The stereotype came from the fact that more gay men sound like that because more of them doesn't want or doesn't care about sounding like a manly man.
I can relate. I sound extremely gay. And I'm NOT gay. Seriously. Goddammit.
I sound gay and I'm only half gay.
I have a bit of a gay twang to my voice I guess. I'm guessing it's more dialect though. I'm not gay as far as I know, although I've never had a girlfriend nor boyfriend so I can't really prove it to anyone either way.
I don't think I sound gay but I am.
I don't care if I sound gay, I just want a lower voice, like some child is talking to you I swear.
I hate having a slight gay voice, not because of the fact but because people will be asses about it. Hard to hide it too.
actually, doesn't homosexuality have something to do with female hormones perhaps you're onto something
But clearly there are straight people in the video that "sound gay"..
I believe its more about the environment and people picking up certain intonations because of it. For instance, someone who "speaks gay" could have been primarily raised by women, or at least had very many prominent female figures as apposed to males. It seems only natural that someone would end up picking up the rhythmic bounce and intonation of whichever gender they spent the most time around, regardless of sexual orientation. But obviously, it appears to be much more complex than that, as there are a lot of exceptions.
i'm kind of paranoid over sounding like this, i think it's very slight and comes out of consciously correcting my southern accent. the worst part about it is that i am actually straight
I wonder if I sound gay, I don't get flirted with by girls very much. Then again I don't get flirted with by guys either.
Maybe gay men evolved for the same reason there are gay lizards and fish and whatnot: smaller animals were unable to compete with 'alpha males' in direct contention for mates, so instead they would pass themselves off as female, mimicking female behaviors and allowing the alpha-lizards and alpha-fish to fuck them, in order to be allowed to stay in the alpha males' territory. Then they'd fuck the female lizards and fish and whatnot when the alphas went off to hunt or sunbathe. This would continue their genes and go on to produce more female-mimicking betafish and betalizards and beta-whatnots. Assuming gay men exist for this same reason, it would explain the effeminate voice (a natural inclination to imitate female behavior), and it would also explain why there aren't a lot of 6'2 'alpha male' type gay dudes who speak this way. One thing that doesn't make sense is that as far as I know, effeminate gay men don't feel any attraction toward women, and so the piece of the puzzle that's missing is the human equivalent of the "Then they'd fuck the female lizards and fish and whatnot when the alphas went off to hunt or sunbathe" part. More simply, you could also just see it this way: men normally fuck women, gay men want to fuck men, so some of them behave like women. Ay this is a real thing you funny-raters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_mimicry
Its because the higher pitched voice makes you sound effeminate, and for some reason people think all gay people are effeminate too.
The people obviously have never heard of bears [editline]20th June 2015[/editline]
I think I sound like a butch lesbian, does that count?

Gay men tend to only have sex with other men, because they're gay, and would never pass on their genes. It's very likely a hormonal thing, which can have a lot of control over your behavior (and sometimes body composition).
[gayness is] very likely a hormonal thing, which can have a lot of control over your behavior (and sometimes body composition).
I don't understand how this would get through the rigors of evolution if it didn't have a purpose of some sort, like sexual mimicry. Surely animals with a purely random and hormonal inclination to engage in a type of sex incompatible with gene continuation would be naturally selected out of existence? Unless they're also shagging the odd lady along the way.
I'm almost a little jealous of men who sound gay, since their voices are at least expressive. I just sound a robot, since my voice is so monotone. If you've ever heard David X Cohen talk, it's kinda like that.
