Did your math wrong, it's a 1KW laser, not a 1MW laser, keep in mind that mega=million. A 1 Megaton bomb is equal to 1,000,000 tons of TNT equivalent.

Sounds really stupid to clean metal with a 1kw laser since it would reflect and burn whatever it hits in the background. I guess if you have a laser proof room and wear laser protection it's pretty good.

The reflection off of bare metal would most likely be so diffuse that you don't really have to watch out for anything.

The slight inefficiency of the mirror (it doesn't reflect all the light, it absorbs a little) would probably allow it to absorb enough heat and burn/melt.
