Senate Democrats say they are accepting a deal with Senate Majority Leader•Mitch McConnell•(R-Ky.) for an immigration vote, clearing the way for passage of a bill to reopen the federal government. Watch, mitch waffles, they put something to vote, either it passes or not and ryan flatly denies it any vote at all. Then come the next spending bill, they shut things down again
So I can stop worrying about delayed tax returns?

Well that's frustrating [editline]22nd January 2018[/editline]
I dunno, I think they're realizing everyone was blaming them fir the shutdown, which was the opposite effect they wanted.
I saw more blame on Trump
I dunno, I think they're realizing everyone was blaming them fir the shutdown, which was the opposite effect they wanted.
Polling on the issue is a mess, still unless ryan and mconnell agree to attach this to the feb 8th funding bill then we are headed to another shut down
This doesn't seem too bad? The GOP has three weeks to do something about DACA or else the Dems can shutdown again, and this bill funds CHIP for six years so that problem is sorted out Conversely, the Dems have three weeks to prove they haven't fucked up. They can't fund the government again without a DACA deal.

Should be easier when CHIP isn't a hostage.
rand paul, as always, too cool for school
He's just permanently mad that the government spends any money at all or does anything.

Disappointed in the democratic senators who compromised without protections for hundreds of thousands of children.
Now that the government is shut down, https://www.donotcall.gov/ is also down And I've gotten 3 fucking illegal spam phone calls from "Allison with the warranty department" in the last 24 hours after weeks of no spam calls. My phone has been on the government do not call list for years. I wonder if these two things are related.

Does the gov just tell call centers to not call numbers put on the list? If so that is a pleasant surprise from the government for once. edit: fixed misplaced "not"
This is exactly what I suggested that Democrat Senators should have done in the first place, in that other thread. Vote for the Republican financing bill which would have prevented the shutdown and provide funding for CHIP, and then debate DACA at a later date. Here's to the Democrats and Republicans for being responsible. [editline]23rd January 2018[/editline]
Disappointed in the democratic senators who compromised without protections for hundreds of thousands of children.
Immigration reform is hardly relevant to government financing. It shouldn't have been a rider on a bill meant to prevent a government shutdown. They are two separate items that ought to be debated separately, and now that's going to happen. That is how government should work.
In what possible universe could this be viewed as the republicans being responsible

McConnell, early Monday, promised to take up an immigration bill that would protect an estimated 800,000 "Dreamers" from deportation, under an open amendment process, if Democrats would agree to end the government shutdown.
Both sides compromised. As they should.
I don't trust McConnell nearly as far as I can throw him.

In the us you get conservative legislation from compromise, like the ACA is relatively conservative. Bad illustration I made in ms paint. [t]https://i.imgur.com/E89PjhM.png[/t] It's a terrible situation. edit: overall the political opinions are fairly diverse, from sanders to paul, but the two party system is total garbage and got us in this mess. edit2: added more to the first sentence.
Both sides compromised. As they should.
I want to buy your house, and you refuse. So I take your children hostage, and you now allow me to buy your house in return for the children. Do you get praised for being a master negotiator and compromiser? Better yet, should I get praised as a compromiser?

How about you actually talk about government and what happened instead of whatever that nonsense is?
I dunno, I think they're realizing everyone was blaming them fir the shutdown, which was the opposite effect they wanted.
Well some politicians actually have ideological integrity and dont want to cause suffering to millions of people, wish the same could be said of the party for family values.
In what possible universe could this be viewed as the republicans being responsible
You should just ignore BF. He's trying to play the part of centrist but the last thread on the shutdown proved he's not actually centrist at all. People spent like two or three pages trying to explain to him how the Democrats were already trying to compromise with the Republicans (coincidentally a trait that seems largely exclusive to them in Congress) and he just flat out ignored it and after repeatedly being called out on it jumped out of the thread only to repeat the same bullshit here.
I'm not seeing the analogy? How about you actually talk about government and what happened instead of whatever that nonsense is?
I want to keep the government running but some random cretins come up saying "yeah ok but we cut children in needs' healthcare." was that clear enough for you?
I'm not seeing the analogy? How about you actually talk about government and what happened instead of whatever that nonsense is?
You're literally ignoring a hostage situation to make the argument from a centrist point of view. The irony being any hostage situation isn't a centrist point or act.
I want to keep the government running but some random cretins come up saying "yeah ok but we cut children in needs' healthcare." was that clear enough for you?
Actually CHIP has bipartisan support and it wasn't that anything was cut from it, rather that the program expired before it could be renewed. But now, thanks to the Democrats and Republicans, it has been renewed. Eventually the Democrat Senators realised how wrong they were to do that, hence why they have now agreed to support the Republican bill to re-open government and provide funding for CHIP. Now that that's out of the way, the Senators can move on to passing DACA.

"it's a hostage situation if the democrats don't give up everything, and give in to the republicans demands on everything" The republicans pushed the government to shut down, again. While holding all three branches because they couldn't get Everything they wanted.
