So as someone who has almost 0 knowledge of Knack, what was wrong with the first one? Was it just a mediocre launch title?

According to Metacritic and other sites back in the day and now: yeah.
Not surprising seeing as how platformer + beat-em up usually doesn't mix well together, with a number of exceptions.

It was a pretty average platformer beat-em-up with the most common criticism being that the game was really damn hard if you come in expecting a family-friendly title.
