Chelsea E. Manning, the transgender former Army private who was convicted of passing sensitive government documents to Wikileaks, has filed to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, according to federal election filings.
Manning, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, would be challenging Democrat Ben Cardin, who has served two terms in the Senate and is up for re-election in November. Cardin is Maryland’s senior senator and is considered an overwhelming favorite to win a third term.
Manning, 30, who is formerly known as Bradley Manning, was convicted in 2013 of the largest leak of classified documents in U.S. history and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Last year, then-President Obama commuted Manning’s sentence to time served and she was released from a military prison in Kansas.
The news of Manning’s filing caught Maryland’s political class by surprise on Saturday afternoon. It was first reported in a tweet by conservative media outlet Red Maryland.

Manning moved to Maryland after her release from prison. Since then, she has written for The Guardian and Medium on issues of transparency, free speech and civil liberties, transgender rights and computer security, according to her web site.
Manning’s statement of candidacy was filed with the Federal Elections Commission on Thursday. She is running as a Democrat and refers to Maryland as her “home state” on her web site. The Democratic primary is scheduled for the end of June.
I wish her good luck but I'm not sure if her chances are anything worth mentioning, even in a blue state.
Manning is viewed as a traitor by a sizeable portion of the US. I don't think she has any chance whatsoever.

I view her as a patriot and I still wouldn't vote for her.
I think she kinda lost her privilege to handle sensitive materials after last time she had access.

She might make it in Maryland though.

I wouldn't completely dismiss the probability of her winning anyway.

Right, I don't trust her at all. As a senator she'd once again have access to classified information - who's to say she won't leak more information for whatever self-justified reason she comes up with?

Probably because she would never make it anywhere near an intelligence committee. There are senators who have done worse
Hmm, someone with the values on transparency and equalty is just what america needs in this moment. I wish her the best of luck because inside USA she's considered sadly as a traitor.
But then again Trump and other undesirables are in the power so who cares really.

Transparency and equality require tact and consideration. What Manning did was dump a huge sum of information irregardless of what the content actually was. Of course there were things in there that needed to come to light, but there were also things that should have never been release and possibly caused the death of many informants as well as release identities of people who were supposed to be classified.
Having the courage to be a whistle blower is one thing, having the restraint to actually consider all that you are releasing is another.

Was this actually confirmed anywhere? I'll admit I didn't follow the Manning trial too closely but I feel like that would have been bigger news. I might have missed it though.
In any case I agree with some of the posters earlier on. Someone who is famous for leaking classified information probably shouldn't be put into a position where they may have access to many classified materials.

WikiLeaks fucked her over in this regard.
I don't think she is a serious contender
This is how Manning has been posting since she got out though.

I'm not surprised the person who spent time in military prison has problems with authority, but with that attitude she'll never come close to being elected. A lot of people hate cops, but a lot more recognize their importance to society.
i feel this is less about her actually winning the race and more about encouraging more trans or nonbinary people to run for governmental positions. she probably knows she has no chance of actually winning but the idea of her running is pretty inspirational, at least imo
I'm not surprised the person who spent time in military prison has problems with authority
I dont think that justifies the "fuck the cops" bit in that tweet
Military law enforcement and regular law enforcement are very different. Bashing one group because of X problems he might have with the other is just petty and selfish

More than recognize them, a lot more proudly go "BlueLivesMatter" and support the heck out of them.
More than recognize them, a lot more proudly go "BlueLivesMatter" and support the heck out of them.
Is there something wrong with that though? I'd rather have a candidate that proudly says "support the police" than one that proudly says "fuck the police"

I'd like one that holds police accountable.
I also think your job shouldn't be your life. I'm not making t-shirts saying animator lives matter.
Yeah no thanks. She's out of prison, and she can stay out of the news. Would rather not have another inflammatory snot try to get a seat in government, no thanks.

Not sure what you mean, police often put their lives in danger as a part of their jobs. The only mortal danger animators get up into as a part of their jobs is the risk of contracting diseases from fat weebs buying their autograph at a convention

hey man animator lives are an ergonomic nightmare if they're not careful.
Of course police frequently put there lives in danger but it's something that they signed up for. They ultimately have a choice in the matter, black people can't stop being black.

maybe a better example of a job that takes over your life too much are coal miners.

or maybe this is part of that trend we've been seeing with roy moore etc. where crooks are getting a lot more brave about running for government positions
This is how Manning has been posting since she got out though.
and it's very enjoyable, but not what I'd expect (or want) from anyone holding a political office.

you realize that supporting the police doesn't necessarily mean giving them free reign to do whatever the fuck they want, right? a responsible candidate would hopefully be one that supports the police but also makes sure to keep them in line.
and the point of "bluelivesmatter" is that there are legitimately people going around saying that people should kill cops, literally just because they're cops. there are bad cops, but it's safe to say that most cops become cops in an effort to help people. it has nothing to do with if they chose to be cops or black or computer animators, the point of the "xlivesmatter" slogan is that you shouldn't fucking kill people because of a group they belong to.
Mid last year you got to see Joe Arpaio get off scott free from running his self-described concentration camps, you got to see an officer get off free after forcing some dude to play twister and then executing him, you got to see officers planting drugs as evidence from their bodycam, if you followed the j20 trial you got to see some serious attempts on the 1st from police trying to convict people they randomly picked out of a crowd of protesters for 70 year sentences. this year we got to see a swatting kill someone and the officers didn't give the proper instructions and executed the dude on his doorstep.
Manning is aware of this and of similar incidents on which to base her statement "fuck the police".

It didn't have an effect on national security at least
I mean she did do significantly less treason than most of the Republican senate/congress.
Is there something wrong with that though? I'd rather have a candidate that proudly says "support the police" than one that proudly says "fuck the police"
How about neither?
Police are an important institution for society. That doesn't stop it from having many problems that need addressed, which "blue lives matter" espousers tend not to care much about since it's largely a reactionary backlash to BLM-types.
This is how Manning has been posting since she got out though.
To be fair, solitary confinement in a maximum security military prison is considered just as bad as enhanced interrogation at gitmo and at least those guys got yard time
That would color anyone's attitude towards law enforcement in this country
