I've always liked to look at GMan as some sort of "destroyer" of the Combine. If I'm not completely wrong, the Combine found the earth through all the portal activity and ended up using the Xen dimension for travelling to earth. So I've always thought that GMan did this all on purpose, trying to catch the Combines attention.

I actually thought that the combine were trying to capitalize on two enemies fighting, wiping both out and stealing the loot.
I doubt Gman foresaw the combine, more so wanted to exploit Zen, and just miscalculated the combine. In regards to the Eli incident, I think Gman wanted the combine to go get Gordon instead of killing him. Since Gordon was free from his leash.
Or maybe he was trying to use Earth military to wipe out the Xen, but of course I have not played Half-Life and do not know how efficient the human military was against them..
(Because of humanity's history and such, not to mention nukes).
maybe gman just shows up at random times to fuck with people
and that he doesn't actually mean anything
Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 are not 20 years apart.
2:40 Chell Theory
Dr. Kliener/Barney etc. would have been 20 years older looking in Half-life 2.
It could only be 6-7 year difference.
Oh my god, I never knew that the turret song had lyrics...
Gordon was dreaming the entire time while on the monorail to Black Mesa.
I think Gman was just doing business at first but multiple times throughout HL2 and the episodes he does help you.
Maybe Gman has grown attached to Gordon and doesn't want him to die?
I like your theories though. We just gotta wait till HL3 to find out all the answers.

You do realize Alyx was a baby at the time of HL1 right?
What is that beautiful video that starts at 1:41 in the portal video?

Yes, it is 20 years later. Alyx was a baby during Black Mesa, and Kliener and Eli are quite old in HL2.
Didn't they say that Portal 2 took place hundreds of years after the first Portal?
The G-man theory is quite good, but the Portal video seems to have quite a few things wrong, like the Time difference between the games and the thing about the foreman being a clone. The adoption theory is based on pretty much nothing but random speculation, there isn't really anything to support it. He also somehow came to the conclusion that the potato project supported that theory, despite it saying Cave & Her dad were different people. Most of it is just looking way too far into things. There is very little evidence for any of it but he seems fairly sure that Chell is Caves daughter.

iirc final hours of portal 2 says it took place 20,000 years after
Xen's residents were enslaved by the Combine. They at first convinced the Nihilanth the same way they later convince Breen to create synth factories on his world and enslave its inhabitants, creating the synth soldiers with the hornet guns. Breen was approached by the G-man with the special crystal sample and was offered a deal. A deal where Breen gives up the earth to the aliens, but will become the "ruler" of it. The Gman, knowing how to manipulate any situation, leads Gordon exactly where he wants him to. He manipulates the situation and has Gordon launch the Lambda satellite, which later becomes the tether source for the Combine to portal into the world, along with creating the portal storms. He then influences you to kill the Nihilanth, tying up the loose end and giving complete control of Xen over to himself or the combine (whoever "our" is). Freeman is put away by Gman until he is needed for his next stage in the plan.
While not considered a canon installment, Black Mesa is nuked by Gman himself in Opposing Force. It's not clear whether the act of nuking BM is canon, or if the rest of Opposing Force is seen as non-canon.
Half Life 2 starts you out in some sort of Eastern European country, hinting that the United States was completely decimated by the combine and the 7 hour war already, or it has just become so alien infested because of the portal storms and the resonance cascade that it's uninhabitable. Eli, Alyx, Kliener, Mossman and Barney all escape Black Mesa shortly after the event and flee to Europe as fast as possible. As the portal storms ravage the planet, the world's governments are in chaos. The Combine then show up via a portal and take advantage of the confusion and conquer earth in 7 hours. They then place massive skyscrapers called citadels equipped with enormous "thumpers" at their base. This protects the city from ant lion infestation (the impact of which is seen in Episode 1). This forces people to flock to major city centers that contain citadels. This eventually leads to the people relying completely on the combine and their technology to protect them. Breen is then put in as overseer for the Combine. It is revealed by Mossman that the combine have not mastered portal technology. Once they arrive, they must rely on local transport. This means the only portals the combine have is the one that warps to the planet from the satellite, the one in Nova Prospect that Mossman helps create, and the Citadel portal located in City 17.
Many years pass, and the time is finally right for Gman to make his move. He brings Gordon back to tie up another loose end. Breen. After Gordon kills Breen and destroys the portal, Gman attempts to return Gordon back to stasis, but is stopped by the Vortigaunts. This throws off Gman's plans, and forces him to manipulate his way around the situation in an attempt to perform damage control. He isn't able to touch Gordon because of the Vortal powers, but he is able to extend his influence a bit more. Gordon and friends destroy the satellite. This leaves the portal technology in the Borealis as the only thing the Combine have left that can be used to get reinforcements. (Aperture was working on portal technology at the same time as Black Mesa. Black Mesa was able to figure out longer range teleportation, while Aperture was only able to figure out more local "gimmicky" teleportaion. Teleporting from the US to the Middle East is a hell of a lot more useful to the military than teleporting through a wall. Black Mesa got the contract.) It's clear that Aperture, in a last ditch attempt, built some sort of "secret weapon" to out show Black Mesa and its teleport technology. Instead they were too ambitious and the thing fucked up, sending the cargo ship into the arctic circle. Eli knew that this technology would allow the Combine a chance to open up another portal network with their home world. Gman, finally keeping his promise of "unforeseen consequences" manipulates the situation and allows the advisers to show up without any resistance and silence Eli, along with finding out the location of the Borealis.
It's clear that the Gman is either working for the Combine, or is working for himself.
My predictions for Episode 3 so far is that you go to the Borealis, discover the portal technology, and end up going through to the Combine homeworld to find who is really behind it all and kill them.
TL;DR: Gordon Freeman is a Hitman for the Gman.
The only theory of Portal 2 (in the OP) which seems plausible is the one where Chell is Carolin's daugther.

A lot of random speculation, yes, but he did come to the conclusion that Cave and Carolin might have adopted her away for them to focus on science.

This thread really made me want to play the Half Life and Portal games over again.

There is nothing in the first place to suggest they adopted her, or that she is their daughter. It's just random speculation with nothing to support it.

This actually makes a lot of sense.

I just read over what I wrote and don't even understand why I wrote that. It came out so wrong.
I was agreeing with you that there was a lot of random speculation, then I added the unnecessary fact that he came to that conclusion even though you are aware of that :v:
