It's not knocking anything. This is the first time I've heard of the hot dog being used as a emotion shape, but I've been taught with other emotional geometric shapes for film like the hamburger and the milkshake. Case and point, though cleverly left out by this essay, in There Will Be Blood, Daniel Day Lewis uses the literary device of "Milkshake" to evoke a mood of sorrow, pity, and anger in the same scene as the hot dog bowling pins. This creates a contrasting composition of positivity (hot dog) and negativity (milkshake).
