Thread deals more with videos, so I posted it here. Sorry to disappoint if you were expecting a video :(
Like the title says, what are some good tips for commentating a Let's Play video? I'm doing a Silent Hill let's play now, and it's hard to deviate from either panicking because monsters are surrounding me, or telling the audience what I have to do because etc.
I think this is the wrong thread to ask, but I suggest reading up on Silent Hill, talk about the game while you play, how about you mention that the school in silent hill is the same one from kindergarten cop? :v:
Don't talk during cutscenes/dialogue
Don't talk during cutscenes/dialogue
I only comment on dialogue if it's during the game (descriptions of looking at things) and it's really obvious. Like "Playing cards. Nothing unusual." "Except for the fact that they are SPLATTERED WITH BLOOD."
Are you doing post commentary, or talking while you play?
during
Are you doing post commentary, or talking while you play?
Commenting on this, I would only recommend post if you plan on editing parts out
i'm not editing anything out except for starting the stream (booting the game up)
Make sure you've already played through the game/know loads about the game before you do a lets play.
Watching a lets play where the person playing doesn't know what to do or how the game works just isnt fun.
You may find this useful

don't do it if you have a nasally voice
Watch all the retsupuraes, it should help show you what you don't want to do.
As a fellow let's player I can tell you that if you arent doing a script, at least have a few game related things to talk about such as its history or some other things about it. In moderation of course, but mentioning how they affect you and your opinions once in a while can make people want to listen to you. Just dont be preachy about it.
Watch all the retsupuraes, it should help show you what you don't want to do.
Also watch some of their Metroid Prime and Fusion LPs on Blip.TV to get an idea of what TO do, though they try to have 2-3 people at all times, so it's a bit different.
Just act yourself and keep things interesting.
Having watched countless hours of LPs myself (mostly jefmajor) let me say this to you:
1. Don't have a fucking intro clip before every video. They're shitty and annoying and nobody fucking cares about them.
2. Never ever say the words "rate", "comment", or "subscribe". I'll rate, comment, and subscribe all I want without you telling me what to do.
3. I hope you're an outgoing person (or can act like one) because awkward pauses in commentary and frequently fumbling over words is literally the most annoying thing ever. It helps to have a good mic to boot.
4. Don't ever sound depressed or bored, or keep your voice down like there's someone else in the house whom you don't want to hear you. This is probably most important.
5. When I watch LPs, and I assume that this is true for most other people, I watch half because I like their commentary and them as a person, and half because the game they're playing is fun to watch. I don't care if you're an amazing commentator, you're playing fucking checkers seriously stop. Likewise, the most interesting game in the world can be completely ruined by shitty commentary alone.
6. I hope you know how to encode videos properly because a video in shitty quality is a shitty quality video.
7. Talk about stuff! Anything! It doesn't always have to be game related so long as its loosely relevant. The more you open up to your viewers the more they open up to you.
8. And don't ever stop talking unless it's a cutscene or something. But don't go on for too long and don't be afraid to change subjects, or even say silly things because you have nothing left to say. But don't be TOO silly or else you'll fall into "lul so randum xD" territory. Basically, use discretion.
9. Goes with 7 but show personality. If what you're saying could be easily replaced by a robot then you're doing something wrong.
Don't include the cutscenes/dialogue then. The commentary is what makes a let's play interesting, not the game. If someone just wanted to see the game they would just play it on their own.
I watch Let's Plays mainly to see games that I don't/can't play on my own so that i can experience it while also having some funny shit happen too.
cutting out the cutscenes is an instant "Do not watch" to me

Also intro clips are good if they're like the Old SnB intro (For AoM:DC) or Best Friends Play. They're short and tell you "Oh sweet it's these guys I like them"
Just act yourself and keep things interesting.
also have a voice like this guy
Also don't be afraid to break new ground. Show your viewers new and exciting games that they may not have heard of, instead of doing Let's Play Minecraft for the 7429th time.
please don't use a facecam
Everytime I play games I do a commentary in my head.
Sometimes I even almost speak out loud.
Have a personality. It's what you will be known for.
Don't fake your reactions.
Act hyperactive as fuck and keep talking.
And come up with someting interesting/retarded/silly talk about.
I mean that is how most people do it.
Don't try and fill silence by making "lol randum" jokes. So don't do stuff like going "Hah that guy looks like poop because poop is funny. OH! and boobies! HAH BOOBIES". It's those LPers that piss me off the most.
Fill silence by talking about the game, about what you're planning, etc.
Sometimes it's good to try playing old games that people remember fondly, like I'm doing a LP of Freedom Fighters and thinking of doing one of Project Nomads.
It just takes practice really, like I would enjoy some more feedback on my LP of Freedom Fighters. It takes some time to figure out what sort of LP style you are suited for, humour, criticism and so on.
Don't fake your reactions.
I read that as, "don't fake your erections"
[editline]2nd August 2012[/editline]
how would you even do that

There are some things that should make you think, "Is this worth saying?"
This was not worth it.
[editline]2nd August 2012[/editline]
On-topic, would most people watch a LP using text instead of voice commentary if you couldn't/didn't want to speak? I've seen a few use it but voice commentary is the most popular from what I've seen.
Don't have too much silence, its boring
Try to be lively, nobody wants to watch somebody who's half asleep
Watch what you say, don't go spurting off faggot and nigger in a lets play
People get really butthurt
Also watch out for the 1000000 rules about copyright

but not tobuscus HELLO AUDIENCE WAHH LOOK AT ME AM I FUNNY YET GUYS lively
i know it's cliche but try to be youself
Thinking of doing a Prototype 2 LP on INSANE mode because i already beat it on hard.
