This guy probably does legit live in a forest.
I'd be kinda disappointed if he were just some hired actor.
God damn, this reminds me of the primitive technology episode where it takes him hours and hours to make his cord and pump drill. This guy had embers in less than 10 seconds.

The scars all over his legs, arms and chest along with his extremely calloused hands and feet make me think it's real.

So many different ways to make embers it's crazy, but this way would really only work for that style of soft wood, a bow/pump drill is more reliable as it works on more wood types.
