The game's combat system is absolutely terrible, I can't fucking stand it.
When fighting a single enemy, you do this:
IF THE ENEMY CAN'T BLOCK:
1. make sure he gets stuck in a corner
2. stunlock attack him until he dies, dodge if necessary (rarely you'll ever need to, since you've stunlocked an enemy into a corner)
IF THE ENEMY CAN BLOCK:
1. attack
2. roll
3. go back to step 1.
When fighting multiple enemies, you do this:
1. roll
2. roll
3. roll
4. attack
5. go back to step 1.
Blocking is useless in most cases, pistols feel like they have a 70% chance to miss even when shooting big enemies at point fucking blank, enemy patterns are completely unpredictable, their movements are unpredictable as well (alligators don't turn and just snap 180 degrees to face you), enemies teleport all over the fucking place when attacking. (think you're safe from a skeleton who's charging an attack 10 meters away from you? nope, he'll just teleport to you once he finishes charging the attack and swings his sword) I thought that the combat system in Risen 3 would be at least somewhat better than Risen 2, but nope, it's horrible, in fact, it's worse!
I have not died a single time yet though, the game's combat system is just utter shit. :v:
This is not a return to the roots of Gothic nor Risen. This is further expanding on broken/bad mechanics that were in Risen 2.
I can't imagine the next Gothic game to be good, considering that the old crew that made the first three Gothic games is most likely not part of Piranha Bytes anymore.
PS, I raged very much like AngryJoe does in the video when playing this.
It's like I feel a slight fear of being unable to move by just looking at the attack animations.
The biggest downfalls to these games is always the combat. For some reason Piranha Bytes is just incapable of making a good combat system that feels fluent and not a chore. I enjoy everything else in Risen 3 so far though.

In the games defense It got better once learning riposte.
This game is a rolling simulator.
Wasn't this game hyped up as being above and beyond its predecessor, trying to fix past mistakes and so forth?
It seems they didn't learn a damn thing.
This so bad oh my god hahahahaha
"This game reminds me of Ride to Hell"
That's exactly what I thought the second the cinematic started. Also, A is to hit? The fucking A button?
I really liked the first game
Devs what are you doing
In the games defense It got better once learning riposte.
If you need to learn a skill that requires you to spend quite a bit of points into a certain attribute(s) to make the combat less shitty and frustrating, you know the gameplay is ridiculously flawed.
this game looks like the witcher if it was ass backwards and was dead as fuck in every sense of the word.
"Stop spinning around like a fucking ballerina just fucking attack him!" :v:

But yeah that game looks pretty bad.
He rages at the game for throwing tough enemies at you in the beginning.
Don't let this man near the Soul series.

Did you even watch the video? Enemies in Dark Souls don't turn 180 degrees instantly and attack you multiple times before your attack animation can finish
And there is also lock-on.

true, should probably be available from the start just because it feels necessary. Would be far better if enemies didn't want to backstep all the time too causing them to go up cliffs and whatnot.
one of his complaints was getting hit during a combo. Just because you can combo doesn't mean you should either. Sure it's not fantastic and the combat is pretty poor but just making it look worse because he wants to do a combo is pretty lame too.
The beginning was like the worst Black Flag ripoff imaginable.
How did they even get the money to make Risen 3 when 2 was utter garbage?
Damn, there I was hoping it's gonna be Gothic's glorious return.

He was being slaughtered by walking human-sized chickens that were supposed to die in a handful of sword swipes. But your alternate gun attack's inaccuracy, your character having overdone main attack animations delaying them from doing shit, and the chickens literally leaping over and hitting you mid-attack with much faster animations make it much harder than it needs to be. When starter enemies have an overall advantage against you in such a way, it's a pretty good sign the combat system is unbalanced and/or broken. It's not even really comparable to the Soul series, in that regard.

Yeah, last time I checked the Dark Souls/Demons souls series actually had functioning combat, maybe even the best combat system
risen 2 got pretty cool once you got guns
[editline]16th August 2014[/editline]
assuming this is probably the same. slow kinda shitty start that gets better as you get into it

You could cheese the entire game with a rifle or shotgun lol just roll around until you get enough time to reload and then shoot them, repeat.
epic raging haha

None of the games in the Souls series have tough enemies at the beginning.
Keep in mind that this is a game made by the same studio as the Gothic series.
People are hoping they return to the Gothic franchise but I pray they don't.

Unless you were like me and went to the Catacombs at the start of Dark Souls.

I did too on my first playthrough. Pinwheel is stupidly easy.
Now I always go through the catacombs when I start a new character to get the rite of kindling. :v:
This game was the #1 best seller yesterday.

Wait, so the combat got worse in the sequels?
Dear god. The combat in Risen was already pretty shitty.
Parrying was useless, enemies had near instant attacks and no stun time, enemies would dodge and charge like acrobats (even if they're midgets), you couldn't cancel or move or even turn when attacking, enemies could block or parry with their face while your blocking was shit, etc.
And the main character has the personality of a wet paper sack. In Risen 1, once you beat the final boss, he groans and casually walks away like "ugh, finally."

There's a difference between tough enemies and unfair enemies.
The Souls series is the former, the Risen series is the latter.
