Pretty clever, now if only they'd port it over to PC.
Arc System Works really just shit on the chest of anyone else who did the fighting games with 3D models in 2D space thing before them with GGXrd imo. I wouldn't even have known if they didn't show it off in the original trailer.
I think it's neat how they intentionally gimped the animations to make them look more believable.
it still looks pretty three-dimensional but more like anime CG than typical video game rendering
I remember watching tons of videos on this and it took a few weeks before someone told me it was 3D.
Okay, that is legit impressive.
Weird how they used textures at all, really - I would have thought you could do all of it with vertex attributes, which is essentially what they were doing since they weren't lerping between texels. Guess it was easier on the workflow.
I wouldn't mind if they gave BlazBlue this treatment as well, problem is I don't want them to cut half the roster for it.
The main advantage of 3D is that it's easier to re-use the assets once you have them. Now that Capcom made SF4 they never have to do another hadoken animation again unless they really want to.
It's still really time-consuming and expensive up-front though.
i like kof13's "sprites" way more than xrd's mainly because it's not simulated to look like it's a 15 fps animation.

In effect, they model the characters in 3D, render them out as 2D, then painstakingly pixel-art the lighting and details on. This takes over a year to complete per-character, and probably costs way more money than SNK can honestly really afford to spend nowadays.

it's obviously 3D made into 2d sprites though, Xrd emulates 2D sprites which is an entirely different concept
