Asbestos as home insulation. Throw that on the pile of Great Ideas Humans Had Until They Started Killing Us.
My high school was full of asbestos in the crawl spaces. Every crawlspace hatch and on every ceiling there were warnings not to disturb the ceiling tile or enter the crawlspace because of asbestos contamination. The school library was the bottom floor of a three-floor structure and the top two floors were classrooms that had been abandoned and sealed up due to asbestos contamination. The classes were evacuated during a class, so there was still stuff written on the chalkboards from the day they were sealed away. The year after I graduated they started tearing the whole structure down so it could be rebuilt without asbestos, and now the top two floors are connected to the school again and house the computer labs. It was really weird seeing the hallway not be blocked off at the second-story passageway.
