Fuck I remember first watching this guy a bit before he started uploading on Screwattack, which was late 2006/early 2007
I'm stunned I've watched the same guy for so damn long and haven't grew out of it.
that was a really weird episode tbh
I feel bad for Legends.
It was an okay game tainted by bad controls. By no stretch was it completely awful, but there were a lot of flaws that were hard to look past.
X7 was a fucking mistake upon the X series though. It redeemed itself a bit with Command Mission and X8 afterwards, but it's hard to get the bad taste of X7 out of your mouth when you've experienced it. The story was terrible and the voice acting was fucking trash, not X4 bad (I wish he touched on that) but still really bad. The voices for the characters they used in Command Mission and on were fairly decent. Especially X since I mean how can you go wrong with Domon Kasshu.

Kinda sad he shat on X5 that hard. Besides when I played MegaMan 3 a few times when I was really little, X5 was my first MegaMan game and it hold a special place in my heart
I loved this episode, really brought back some memories. To be honest I'm not sure if I would like AVGN videos if I just saw them now but because I saw them when I was young I just have this weird connection to it. I wouldn't call it a sentimental connection but something akin to that.
Plus James Rolfe just always puts a smile on my face. Something about that guy is just really charismatic. I don't say this often about internet personalities but I would love to have a beer with James.
That Nostalgia Critic joke.

Oh my, James's balding. He should just cut his all of his than having that spot in the back.
I loved MM Legends 1 and 2.
I like how it went from wide screen to 4:3 when back in time, and then back to widescreen. That's a nice touch.

I played X5 last year for a Zero run after finally conquering X4 with Zero.
Then I made the foolish notion of trying to 100% it while forgetting that X doesn't get a starting armor if you started with Zero. It effectively made properly 100%ing the game impossible, although I realize I [sp]forgot about the Ultimate Armor in Sigma Stage 3[/sp] that would've let me backtrack with more chances of success.
And there's all sorts of little problems, from Alia never shutting up to the lives drain that is the beginning of Squid Adler / Tech Kraken's stage. The game was filled with slow and lazy design choices, such as the three mini-boss fights and corresponding autoscroll sequences in Duff McWhalen / Tidal Whale's stage. But the game is still nowhere near as bad and broken as X6 or X7, just.. boring and mismanaged.
It's insane how it took him until 2011-2012 to get in 16:9, and with that new camera everything looks different
it's really another era before that, not just with the resolution but overall quality
i stumbled upon a recent video by pat the nes punk were mike talked about how it all started, that was really interesting
haven't even watched this video yet, hype v:v:v
I watched the shit out of this guy when he was still the Angry Nintendo Nerd and then for a while after he changed his name to the current AVGN but felt he lost his spark a bit and went for 5 or 6 years without watching him before getting back on the ball and watching him again last year. He's had an undeniable influence on YouTube and "review" channels.
The "Retro Nostologic Videogameing Shitseeker" part cracked me up.

He's 35. I think he can have all the bald spots he wants.
Where is Mega Man X6? Did he forget the hardest one?
Being fully honest, 2010 and beyond was sorta the end of the Nerd for me. Superman 64 was the last really good review. At least one that followed a cheesy classic style
Even though I enjoyed it overall and it was okay, the whole [sp]"quitting" thing was super abrupt and forced.[/SP] It was super random and not built up to.
He's quit plenty of times too, like I think at the start of the ROB video
James always seems to be an innovater when it comes to online review skit stuff, the direction Board James went was seriously incredible and made me appreciate how influential he could be
His impression of Van Canto was spot on
That Teddy Bear at 18:15 says its from 2015 on the foot
fucking plotholes
Mega Man is a really "out there" subject to make a video out of, but it's the Nerd's anniversary so who cares right?
Changing topics here since that "shitting on an escalator" line reminded me this: Mighty No. 9 is no doubt going to be a steaming pile of garbage, at the very least being a "meh" experience when it finally releases with Red Ash very likely following suit afterwards. It's only going to make people appreciate both the Classic and all the spin-off Mega Man series of games even more if that were the case.
What's more bizarre is how this whole situation went further topsy-turvy with Capcom recently giving better care to the Blue Bomber (Mega Man's inclusion in SSB4, Legacy Collection, etc).
I'm probably gonna sound butt hurt but, Mega Man Legends did have the movement option he was talking about, you have to toggle it in the options. The default one isn't that bad in person though. [Del] please buy 1&2 on psn so we could maybe get 3, they're fun I promise [/del]
Great video though, kinda made me tear up a bit. Both because of the Nerd and because I've been playing these games frequently my entire life.

The fact he didn't have much bad things to say about the series really says a lot about it
I feel bad for Legends.

Basically this. It's playable and one of my favorite game series, but it will take several hours to get used to how you are actually supposed to move. While this technically means that the controls can feel ok after a while (as opposed to games that just outright are unresposnive as hell all the time), that's still unacceptable for a 3D game.
Once you get used to how you are supposed to move though, it's actually tons of fun.
Legends could really benefit from a more modern control scheme, or at least proper Z-targeting that allows you to move and shoot. The sequel kinda got it right but it was still very finicky and certain weapons still required you to stand still to fire. Since they didn't have analog on the controller at the time of its release, the controls are more like Armored Core of all things rather than anything you'd think of for a 3D Mega Man game. [sp]too bad we're unlikely to see a revival of the franchise any time soon, much less Capcom touching the Legends games past Legends 1 and Misadventures getting PSN releases last year[/sp]
It's hard to deny that it was a hell of a pioneer that gets underappreciated for what it did, though. It basically did a good amount of the 3D Zelda formula a year before Ocarina of Time created it, as well as an anime-style story with an extensive amount of voice acting and cutscene-specific animations. Hell, they even drew unique face textures for the characters just for certain scenes and perspectives. This was a year after Resident Evil pioneered the cinematic experience in 3D, and also a year before Metal Gear Solid would codify cinematic games as a thing all on its own.
I forgot to make a thread this time but Legends 2 actually made it to psn last week. It's nice to have all the legends games in one place now.
*snip*
Guess I'll be the first one to say that I didn't like this episode. AVGN has changed a lot and it's really obvious he's changing his gig to fit the times.
This may be a red herring but compare some of his new video thumbnails to his old ones:
New

Old

Yes not all of his new videos are like the former and yeah he has done some good recent videos like Tiger eletronics, Seaman or Atari Sports but in my opinion he's pandering to his fans too much and also forgot why people liked him.
The AVGN movie is kind of testament to the first point, it was sort of funny to a fan because you understood the jokes and the cheesy effects are fine because that's what he does. But as a standalone movie the AVGN movie was pretty bad.
It seems like James did research on what kids like these days and is trying to copy LPers and reaction vids, except he's 35 but those two genres are kind of obnoxious anyway.
AVGN was never about raging at bad games, it was as the theme says, to take you back to the past. Seaman was only a good video because the game itself was just interesting. But otherwise I never really enjoyed his videos on newer games. Picking on Big Rigs or HK97 is just too easy.

I definitely prefer Mike's videos. He seems to actually play games so him and Ryan (that chubby guy) have a good synergy because Ryan is a modern gamer while Mike is still more traditional however he still does buy and play new games. He just doesn't know about the latest trends or lesser known indie games like Stardew Valley. The videos the two put out are kind of like showing an older gamer colleague that video games are still great and I really like that.
I always found Mike Matei to be absolutely insufferable when he's playing himself or an obnoxious character. When he's mellowed out he's easier to watch, but only when he's not trying too hard to be funny. He's better when he's natural.

I can see that, it was usually when it's him/james/bootsy though. When he streams or is with Ryan he's more natural.
I should maybe clarify the point I made before. I think I sorta agree with ashxu.
What I really mean is that gradually, James' delivery as the AVGN became sorta aged as he got older. I mean, that's all I can really see it as, unfortunately. The old room episodes saw more of a sharper, casual, involved type of deal. When he had a joke it sounded exactly like that - a joke that one friend tells to another. It was exaggerated, but in such a way that one could find it lovable and genuinely relatable. Contrasted to what he does now, which ends up just feeling way more contrived with the faces and the goofiness. Not all the time of course, that'd be ridiculous. There are moments that actually flow well and I can enjoy it. This is simply what I've noticed since I've been a fan since what he dubs "Season 3" of the series. When James would talk, it really kinda would sound like your drunken bro ranting on about Friday the 13th and just being ridiculous. To put it plainly: that goofiness felt natural, like he WAS the walking talking b-movie. Now it feels like he's TRYING to be a b-movie. Almost like a weird ripoff of himself.
I considered it being nostalgia, but considering that I actually do binges of the first 3 seasons pretty often, I think it's just that the show is different. I can still have a good laugh at the older AVGNs. I'm really not trying to say "older avgns" were better just for the fuck of it, I just genuinely find way less to enjoy in most of the new ones. The only reason I say this is because watching this review got me stressed over me trying to enjoy it how I enjoy older eps, and instead this review kinda showed me exactly all the differences back to back
