I don't understand where a lot of hate comes from when it comes to his mapping tutorials. I used to love watching his hammer mapping videos because they were quick and to the point. I can easily say that I've made a handful of good looking, functioning maps using mostly his videos as guidance; aside from more in-depth tutorials on more complex mapping related topics. I suppose he does things that other people would consider "a bad habit", but I still find his tutorials useful, and enjoyable to watch on occasion.
(but you all probably hate him I don't know)

i'm not a mapper but i find a lot of his analysis videos of various parts of CS:GO to be interesting
Goddamnit, why wont anyone address the fart in the room?!
jokes aside, I quite like his analysis of bugs and updates. Had no idea there were those "hidden" bugs in stairs, and I probably just pass through and feel them and think its normal.

In the mapping section here on FP, a lot of the hate was based around him establishing bad habits within new mappers. For instance, in one of his older videos about creating a basic map, he instructed the viewer to simply put the map within a hollow box that would act as the skybox, while noting that this was not the optimal way to do it, but fine for simple test maps. Then a bunch of garbage maps surrounded by hollow boxes came around, and tons of inexperienced mappers flooded the forum asking why their maps compiled and ran really slow, all with a huge box surrounding them.
This combined with other such examples made a lot of the FP mappers hate and discredit him.
It was never really his fault, though, he created very basic tutorials designed for people who wanted to start mapping, cutting away technical terms and making things very easy to understand as to not confuse anyone, while also putting out more advanced tutorials on optimization and what not to watch once of you've grasped the basic things. The problem is that a lot of people sponged up the basics and then left to create abominations, which, as he said, he was blamed for

It really is ridiculous. It's like expecting middle schoolers to draw perfect circles and then getting mad at the teacher who gives them a protractor. I always loved philip's tutorials because they were exactly what he said they were, basic, to the point, and short. Once you're familiar with the basics of Hammer, then you can go and try to create your Mona Lisa map.

Can't disagree, myself. Loved his old tutorials on mapping, they were one of my primary sources besides Facepunch humorously enough. He makes a good point in the video that they should be quick, easy to digest and to the point- and his were. They did exactly that and left the mapper with enough knowledge and possibly with further questions that they could go to the Valve Developer Community or elsewhere with.
And I gotta say I'm incredibly happy with where he's been going with new videos. This guy has some put out some great stuff, like his CS:GO Workshop Map testing server. Hope he continues!
I only really found his channel after his mythbuster style CSGO videos.
I didnt even know he made mapping tutorials until this video. It does seem like FP were a bit harsh but i understand why.
Having simple basic tutorial videos are better than no videos.

And it's why you never teach bad habits in the first place, doesn't matter the reasoning, there will always be people that will ignore "it's a bad habit but it's okay in JUST THIS occasion" warnings and just do it on all their maps because it was the first method they learned and chances are they aren't going to be assed to learn a second method of doing the same thing because hey, the first method works, even if it's shit, so why bother.

It's really not that simple. The people who are carving their entire maps are the people that are going to stop using hammer after their 5th map, you get what you put into it. Stepping into the world of mapping isn't easy, and I remember not being able to find any good tutorials when I fucked around with hammer in 09. There were tons of 14 minute videos on something that takes 20 seconds to do in Hammer when you're used to it, and they were convoluted as hell. I found Philip's tutorials on how to make water, moving props, ect and I actually felt like I was accomplishing something with my time. And later on I learned about area clips, nodraw, and all of the advanced stuff.
It's not Philip's fault when he states that this is a quick and dirty solution and then kids never evolve their mapping skills. I'd give him props for making tutorials so clear that 9 year olds are using a video game mapping software tool in fact. I think Philip has a great understanding of how people learn.
Alex from WorldOfLevelDesign gave me my starting knowledge when I used hammer, I like how he has both video and text for a subject if you prefer one over another
Out of of curiosity what exactly are you supposed to do with maps in order to prevent leaks that are not hollow boxes?
Out of of curiosity what exactly are you supposed to do with maps in order to prevent leaks that are not hollow boxes?
Not create janky as fuck brushwork in the first place.
Literally that's all there is to it, realise that you must stick to the grid, and there must be no space to the void. Hammer even provides the leak detection tool to point out where a leak is. And if there isn't a visible leak, you've got a micro-leak between brushes thanks to floating point precision being shit. Just realign the edges near that leak to the grid again and you're groovy.
Wrapping the entire fucking thing in a hollow box should never have been considered. Even in a "basic" tutorial it's not hard to say "only put this stuff where you need it, otherwise shit gets slow".
When I was learning Hammer, I really only used Philip's hammer tutorials as references to learn how to do very specific things. How does light_environment work? What do the skyboxes look like? Fog? I adored his tutorials for that stuff because it gave me precisely what I was looking for without having to wait for some long winded guy to finally get to the point
expected a video on fartmaster
