This is pretty old, but I just had to repost it.
Rather then make fun of "hipster activists etc.", this video actually presents an important problem. Everyone can't educate themselves in chemestry, law, and so on. This example is extreme, but still easy to fall for. Who can we trust?

I don't see how dihydrogen monoxide is extreme.

Knowing what dihydrogen monoxide is is NOT extreme.
This is a very common sociological experiment in college classes. This works with everyone, and it's not necessarily because they're stupid, it's because people's minds don't process the name as a chemical compound, just a very long name. I mean, if you want to get just about everyone use the term "Hydroxic Acid" or "Hydric Acid"; they both mean water, but they're uncommon names for it and they don't follow the naming conventions that people are normally presented with.
Don't call these people stupid because of their ideology in this case, it's just human nature. Most everyone falls for it, on both sides of the political isle.

I don't see how knowing the chemical name for anything is common sense.

It isn't. The fact that no one asked what it was is more worrying, however.
Makes me sad they removed this from Netflix.

not understanding that H2O = water is bad

Dihydrogen Monoxide and Sodium Chloride are REALLY basic names, not knowing what they are would be the equivalent to not knowing what respiration refers to.
