I was pretty disappointed there wasn't any HL2 content in there like there was in Portal 1.

Well think of it, portal was built off a build of the source engine which was just there at the time, it was purely done as really a game play test which went public.
Portal 2 however was designed to be completely focused on its self, so it uses a whole new branch for its self, thus removing all the extra unneeded content.
Pretty much the same sketch can be applied to left4dead as well, first game has parts of the prior engine builds in it, while the sequel after it is completely stripped down to only what's needed.
I'm guessing Valve will just add content updates to portal 2's version of source when they release their next few games.
