oh god, DLC for early access games?
Christ it hurts seeing how awful this year was. It really hurts because I love gaming, and what it does. But it sucks seeing all this shit going on, and almost little to NO light at the end of the tunnel for anybody. [editline]26th December 2013[/editline] Why IS Gone Home getting praise? Why are people bashing so hard on people who admire Gone Home for it's perks? Why are people getting more and more sensitive about all of this bullshit, instead of just lying back thinking about how awesome it was to see the Ending of Bioshock or knowing that Next year is going to be so amazing? I've always wanted to join the game industry since I was young because it helped me through very bad personal times, and I want to give back to the world what I was given. But if this industry is honestly thinking about adopting ass tactics just to get as much money as possible before people realize they've been had, then my dreams have been crushed. It doesn't help that no one is giving an optimistic point of view on the whole year, it's just about how much it all sucks and that the industry and business is the devil, and how horrible people are for celebrating Phil Fish quitting because of trolls, and how media companies don't give a shit anymore.
He missed something. Microtransactions. Developers misusing the paying system that TF2 lead.
oh god, DLC for early access games?
It's an online F2P game. That DLC is basically the founders pack which every other online F2P game does.
all of the stuff he talked about really doesnt bother me as long as there are good games coming out great games came out this year but they weren't THAT great
all of the stuff he talked about really doesnt bother me as long as there are good games coming out great games came out this year but they weren't THAT great
Yeah exactly. All I got was a shit ton of bad horrible news that killed my mood. I liked Bio Infinite, I thought Assassin's Creed IV was fun and enjoyable. There wasn't a whole lot this year, but next year will be better. I just wish there were more optimistic videos on the subject of 2013 gaming rather than all the bad news we keep hearing.
I couldn't agree more with him regarding early access games. it's cool that we get our hands on games like Starbound, DayZ, rust (for some I guess), wasteland, you name it, but we get so burned out on an unfinished game that the finished game no longer is all that enjoyable, no matter how much content has been put in since you last played.
It's an online F2P game. That DLC is basically the founders pack which every other online F2P game does.
Isn't it pay for early access at the moment though?
-snip-
The pay for early access thing is really kind of shitty. I'd rather wait the five fucking years it'll take rocket and company to finish DayZ instead of paying $30 now, get a watered-down version, and either reach the finished state tired of playing it and knowing everything about it or just not getting a finished state at all because (big issue here) steam gives zero guarantee that you'll actually get a good released game at some point when you buy an Early Access title. I'd like it a lot better if it was more restrictive and had a model that made it so only people who were actually interesting in playtesting and contributing to development could buy it (which boils down to either an impossible hand-picking process, or Planetary Annihilation's brilliant payment model)
He missed something. Microtransactions. Developers misusing the paying system that TF2 lead.
Those aren't really exclusive to this year
He missed something. Microtransactions. Developers misusing the paying system that TF2 lead.
How many games actually use the cosmetic system TF2 has though? The only examples with Pay 2 Pretty I can think of are games from Valve and Uber Ent.
I dont really agree with any of this, but Im not into console gaming that much any more. But doesn't new console years always cause rush releases? I recall it happening for the PS3/360 too.

or I misunderstood you, feel free to correct [editline]26th December 2013[/editline] wow shit 2 guys breaking my merge that was fast
weren't there a lot of cases where publishers treated developers like shit this year? like THQ were dicks to 4A games but when deep silver took over it got better?
This happens at the end of every year, we look back saying how shit it was then look forward thinking it's going to be so much better. But it never is.
With games like Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, The Division, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, Mad Max, Titanfall, East vs. West, Men of War: Assault Squad 2, Wolfenstein, Watch Dogs, Destiny, The Order: 1866, and others all supposedly coming out in 2014 i'm at least decently optimistic that, game-wise, it'll be a good year for gaming.
console gaming? this is much more about gaming in general
But I had tons of fun with PC games this year, and the video doesn't really address it.
I don't agree with everything this guy said - I thoroughly enjoyed BioShock Infinite for instance - but he's bringing up very important points that people need to know about. Oh, and I think the only thing wrong with Gone Home is its price. 20€ is like 4 or 5 times too much for a game that lasts 2 hours and isn't exactly intense. Mind, I haven't played the game, but I think that's the problem.
But I had tons of fun with PC games this year, and the video doesn't really address it.
Games were great if you just want to have fun and aren't one of us turbonerds who keep tabs on stuff like publishers, payment models and the gaming media, which have been getting shittier by the minute this year. There were plenty of good games, even if the most sold/praised were sequels.
How many games actually use the cosmetic system TF2 has though? The only examples with Pay 2 Pretty I can think of are games from Valve and Uber Ent.
When you think of it more in terms of weapons and TF2's really awful drop system, a lot of games get pretty close. Only difference is comparing a minimum wait time with lots and lots of grinding.
The Kickstarter stuff is pretty annoying too. Like back when Planetary Annihilation was being sold for like 90 dollars on Steam.
I really didn't get the "AAA games taking less risks this year!!" How were they better in 2012 if something like GTA V was being made for YEARS, we saw the first trailer in 2011 for god sake
Well, facepunch is part of it too. If you went into any of the Fish-related SH threads and tried to defend Fez as a game (c'mon guys, it wasn't that bad and most of arguments against it were fishy at least) or even signalized that you are going to buy a copy to find out if it's really bad yourself, you would get more boxes and hatefull replies then... well, you get the idea.
My God I hate jump cuts, it was watchable when he was just talking over footage, but at the start I felt like shutting it off.
I really didn't get the "AAA games taking less risks this year!!" How were they better in 2012 if something like GTA V was being made for YEARS, we saw the first trailer in 2011 for god sake
The gaming industry never takes risks but it's put to extremes towards the end of a console's development cycle. And GTAV is just GTA, which is what people wanted, at least they tried to refine it rather than just taking the easy route like Ghosts or BF4, his point wasn't really valid in that area but his point about the gaming industry just not taking risks was. Though the gaming industry is a pile of shit in general.
Most of these changes are irrelevant as long as there are still good games in the world. Like instead of criticizing Gone Home (I personally loved it) one can go play Stanley Parable or all the other amazing games that came out this year. If one is not optimistic about what others are doing in the industry this year, then one should work towards changing it however they are able. Start a website, or make a new kind of game, etc.
