Well, in reality this could happen. Say the hatchet pierced the engine cover and fucked up one of the turbines. You could bring the AH-1Z down. Not explode, but it would definitely be inoperable.

The centrifugal force on the rotors would (probably) strengthen the steel in the rotors.
