A lot of Halo retrospectives recently.
It boggles my mind in retrospect how fleshed out Halo 3s multiplayer was. Most games nowadays can't hold a candle to it. I wish that good ideas like in game map editors, custom games, and file shares came back someday.

The map editor is crazy flexible and still revolves around community content. Honestly playing it with friends reminds me of playing Halo 3 way back when. Surreal to think that was almost 10 years ago.
It's hard to believe for me that Halo 3 is a decade old along with every other brilliant game in 2007.
The Shark game was phenomenal on Halo 3 though. We played that for 9 hour straight once. EDIT: Automerge. My point still stands.
A lot of Halo retrospectives recently.
That's funny considering Halo was the series people loved to hate back when it was popular. I remember Gears of War took the king of xbox mp crown from it but GoW didn't get the hate Halo got, people just ended up hating sepia tone 3rd person military beef man shooters until CoD became the hot new thing everyone loved and loved to hate on.
A lot of Halo retrospectives recently.
It's been 10 years since we've had a truly great Halo game, and especially with the fuckup that has been Halo 5's singleplayer, a lot of people are looking back at the olden days and have been wondering about them.

Singleplayer was a turd, but I do appreciate the fun additions to MP.
ive been a fan since the original xbox came out, my cousin was "that guy who played it too much and just wanted to stomp some kids" in it, so i played it a lot i havent played halo 5 and i probably wont due to not wanting the console, and while i agree halo 4 changed a LOT of what made previous halo games good, i still thoroughly enjoyed it.
A lot of Halo retrospectives recently.
Kids playing those games grew up and started being nostalgic.

man halo 3 days were amazing. i used to play games like fat kid, trash compactor, "smear the queer" for hours and hours every day. i met so many people on xbox live that i still talk to and even hang out with irl now.

Plus back then it was pretty much what CoD became shortly after. Little did people back then know how much worse gaming was going to get later though.
I still keep wondering why they haven't bothered making a Halo 3 port for PC. Maybe nostalgia is strong with this game but I would definitely pay a lot of money to experience it again on PC.
Halo 2. Put yourself in 2007 when Halo 2 was released on PC. It was the year where games made a major leap. It was a game running on a 2001 engine technology in a year where Halo 3 was released on Xbox 360, Crysis came out, COD Modern Warfare, Bioshock... etc. To make it more clear, look at the comparison below. No wonder people were not interested in it, and Microsoft probably made a wise conclusion that it is not their fault, that people just don't care for Halo on PC, and never bothered with Halo 3 port. Plus Phil Spencer himself stated in an interview that the old Xbox management just wanted to make PC gamers buy an Xbox. halo 3 anniversary, maybe? if halo 3 anniversary is coming out i'd say it'd come to PC, but that's a question of if H3A is being made
halo 3 anniversary, maybe? if halo 3 anniversary is coming out i'd say it'd come to PC, but that's a question of if H3A is being made
I doubt there will be Halo 3 Anniversary. Halo 1 and 2 ran on very old tech and looked very dated, so the anniversary editions released in 2011/2014 were a huge leap. But Halo 3 is from 2007, and it looks decent, comparable to the anniversary editions(at least the first one).
On top of that microsoft buggered it with their awful games for windows thing.
Not just games for windows, it was one of the only games to require Vista, the version of Windows nobody bought. By the time Windows 7 came out and everyone upgraded, everybody had forgotten about Halo 2 PC.
bungie.net statistics were amazing, you still don't get that level of detail in almost any games
I still go on bnet to look at my stats from back in the day sometimes. Like, they have records of every single have you've ever played and more. It's stunning.
A lot of Halo retrospectives recently.
The generational cycle of nostalgia.
Warzone should have fucking been the PC F2P one they released. It already has built in packs you can buy. Also Warzone is fucking awesome

H2: [t]http://www.gamershell.com/static/screenshots/0/4342/249441_full.jpg[/t] H3: [t]https://s.gvid.me/s/2017/01/27/Master_Chief_%26_The_Arbiter.jpg[/t] Halo 3 was one of the earlier games to adopt HDR, and a gamma-correct workflow (more or less). They're also one of the first games to use both specular, indirect, and irradiance maps to describe a material, a sort of proto-PBR; and you can see how much it adds to Halo 3's material definition. They also have extensive use of detail textures, photon-traced lightmaps, and dynamic lighting. Sure, their human models aren't the best, and as time goes on you can see the impact of their texture budget on the 360, but to say Halo 3 just needs some 'touching up' is a far cry. If it was to get a true improvement, they would need to open the sources back up, and re-bake higher res normals, and diffuse (if they have them) to fit in the larger budget of the xbone. Something I don't see happening.
specular irradiance indirect maps what h3 just uses diffuse normal and spec maps, if you're thinking cubemaps then those have been in since halo CE, same with detail maps the normal maps aren't even that impressive, pretty much every single asset in the game used height-generated normal maps, including the chief himself [t]http://i.imgur.com/1B04Jfw.png[/t] diff, spec, and norm respectively I mean, just look at the forerunner stuff. "proto-PBR" how can you call it PBR if the metal doesn't even resemble physically accurate metal? No/barely any reflections, same goes for specular, it's not "PBR" at all [t]http://static1.gamespot.com/uploads/original/gamespot/images/2007/263/reviews/825784-926632_20070921_001.jpg[/t] which, as I pointed out, looks similar to h2 [t]http://teambeyond.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Halo-2-Campaign-Screenshot-1.jpg[/t] and even if it does have all of those fancy features you claim it has, that doesn't stop some of the glaring issues left over from the h2 engine such as pureblack shadows on random entities or shadows disappearing entirely on some models regardless of distance or the hilariously overdone bump on some assets. basically, more features doesn't automatically mean it's better. yes "h2 with post-processing" was an exaggeration but the graphical differences are really not as impressive as you make it out to be edit: also dont forget that I'm not shitting on h3, I'm justifying why an HD makeover won't hurt
Games aside, Halo Landfall was pretty fucking awesome still one of my favorite shorts to come out of the franchise
