"Welcome to hhh-acker central!"
I loved the original Perfect Dark. Would have loved to play more games, but that story sounds awful. And WTF, Elvis betraying Joanna? How is that a good idea?
Man Microsoft is stupid. They could of had 3 well made shooter titles but nope. They had to cash in on that Halo money.
Elvis betraying Joanna? How is that a good idea?
Agreed, the Skedar were trying to wipe out the Maians and Elvis clearly liked human culture as indicated by his name and USA waistcoat. Makes no sense to me.
Man Microsoft is stupid. They could of had 3 well made shooter titles but nope. And some of the gameplay stuff sounds almost even too ambitious even for now. If I was Microsoft and someone came to me and said "hey here's this fucking batshit insane retarded plot and here's this crazily giant scale and ridiculously ambitious game can we make it?", I would do the same. It sounded like something that would probably would never be finished even if they had greenlit it.
It sounds like they would've been fun, but the story sounds so fucking stupid.
Sounded pretty okay to me. I like something original.
There's original and there's "we're throwing shit at the wall and taking everything that sticks".
Something bothers me about how we go from the suitably serious yet quirky and at times hilarious Perfect Dark, to the melodrama of Zero, and the edgy, gritty and super-serious story proposed for Core where even friends from the first game go betrayal mode for some reason or another. It's like a reflection of how mainstream game developers during that early-gen period tried to make everything gritty because it was the industry trend at the time, like how Bomberman Act Zero was even remotely a thing at the extreme end of the scale. Plus the game sounded more implausibly ambitious than even some indie games, especially for a team of 12 people being constantly destaffed as they went on.
Sounds like most of the people working on the game should have left the plot alone. Every part the "intrigue" was especially stupid, starting with Joanna. A psychopath, really? Also through this, it really shows how fucked the situation over at Rare really were, having to hide development, all the while constantly scrapping things. It's no wonder why they stopped making anything other than Kinect shit, MS really didn't have a clue as to what Rare should be doing
Perfect Dark's story was always terrible, it starts really good though, the setting was really novel until the point the aliens came along. I think the whole problem is thinking that Joanna Dark was strong enough of a character to carry a game, when she really is kind of flat. If they made a sequel that used the style used in the Japanese ads, it would have been so fucking good. I don't mean literally making the graphics look like that, but rather keeping that dark, silently violent imagery, that intrigue, keep the futuristic stuff without going all the way to aliens. He was a good sidekick combat wise but I found him annoying. And I didn't like fighting the Skedar. I don't know, I think Perfect Dark is the greatest game on the N64 next to Bad Fur Day, but I wasn't crazy about it having sequels.

It's just that thematically it was all over the place. Levels 1-3: Datadyne, classic dystopian sci-fi stuff with the high tech espionage thing added to it. Really phenomenal in terms of atmosphere, starts really strong with the rooftop insertion having you make your way through security to steal an advanced AI prototype, and then shoot your way out. It sets the stage very well. Level 4: Carrington gets kidnapped by Datadyne in retaliation, to try and get him to give up the AI. Sharp contrast from the dark, hi-tech nature of the first level, but it's okay because it serves to show that the game has some range too. Not very consequential to the overall plot, could have been much further ahead, really. Level 5-6: A sort of shitty portrayal of Chicago, but we're back to the dark, futuristic aesthetic set up by the first level. Plot is advanced, oh shit the NSA is involved with Datadyne, they wanna kidnap the president and replace him with a clone to give them access to something called the Pelagic II, who's that blond guy? Does the AI have something to do with this Pelagic II? It's right in the middle of the game so you can bet that those questions will be answered later! Level 7-9: Joanna has to breach Area 51 against her better judgement since that's where the lead takes her, wow this is getting crazy, what sort of weird shit do they have there? You breach the secret underground labs under Area 51 with the help of a friend on the inside, and find out that, oh shit there's actually aliens in Area 51! You help rescue one of them and...Find out it's a literal little green man with a funny voice that calls himself Elvis, uhhhh, never mind that, you escape with the alien and head back to HQ. (This is where it gets retarded) Level 10-12: Ok so you breach the Air Force One because you found out that's where the head of the NSA plans to do his whole "replace the president" scheme. You board the plane disguised as a flight attendant, you find out the president is literally Obama as predicted by a game from the 90's. Then, a fucking UFO of all things breaches the Air Force One in midair, and like a dozen copies of the same blond guy from before show up to kill him. You dispatch of all of them, but the plane still crashes in Alaska after interference from, ugh, Elvis, on his own flying saucer... Ok but whatever, you're still in Alaska, still killing these blonde dudes who you're sure are aliens by this point, you rescue the president, kill the president clone...And then find out the blonde dudes are actually literally Velociraptors in disguise using some magical technology, and they kill the head of the NSA. Level 13: God fucking knows what happened to the president but you somehow get access to the Pelagic II, but oh wait it's already been infiltrated by...Datadyne? Why didn't they just hijack the ship in the first place WITHOUT telling the president? Anyhow, you infiltrate it, with fucking Elvis tagging along, you get onto a sub and reach down to the bottom of the ocean to find a massive alien structure, okay, game just got interesting again... Except it turns out there's a THIRD race that goes entirely unmentioned for the rest of the game that made the whole thing, and for some reason the velociraptors want it because it turns out it's a superweapon or something? And they wanted the super advanced AI to help them take over the thing? What the fuck? Anyhow you convince the AI (Same one that you stole on the first level) to self destruct the entire compound, so you win. Yay. Should have been the end of the game but nooooooo... (I found out from the wiki that apparently the little green men are gonna meet up with the President on the White House?) Level 14: Velociraptors attack your HQ before you get to the White House, for some reason. Naturally you win, except, oh no, you get knocked unconscious and taken by the velociraptors RIGHT as you got them to escape! Level 15: You're literally on fucking space now on the most confusing level in the game. Elvis comes along and he's wearing a vest with the fucking US flag. With the help of Elvis you hijack the ship and use it to head to the Velociraptors homeworld. Level 16: You're on the Velociraptors homeworld shooting them with your space gun until you get to the Velociraptor leader who you then shoot and kill. The little green men triumph, and, that's the game, you win. You are allowed to feel cheated once you realize it was ALWAYS a story about aliens. Literally, you cut most of the alien stuff and the plot suddenly feels a lot more engaging.
(This is where it gets retarded) Level 10-12: but the plane still crashes in Alaska after interference from, ugh, Elvis, on his own flying saucer...
The flying saucer that you saw, stole and rode in already(unless Jonathan went instead) in Area 51.
Ok but whatever, you're still in Alaska,
Canada*
still killing these blonde dudes who you're sure are aliens by this point, you rescue the president, kill the president clone...And then find out the blonde dudes are actually literally Velociraptors in disguise using some magical technology, and they kill the head of the NSA.
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Level 13: God fucking knows what happened to the president but you somehow get access to the Pelagic II, but oh wait it's already been infiltrated by...Datadyne? Why didn't they just hijack the ship in the first place WITHOUT telling the president?
Because that would attract attention and attention is bad because it attracts people like Joanna Dark. But they tried the pacifist method and that didn't work, so they just decided fuck it and stole it.
Anyhow, you infiltrate it, with fucking Elvis tagging along,
You need Elvis to operate the alien gizmos.
Except it turns out there's a THIRD race that goes entirely unmentioned for the rest of the game that made the whole thing, and for some reason the velociraptors want it because it turns out it's a superweapon or something? And they wanted the super advanced AI to help them take over the thing? What the fuck?
The ship is a planet busting megafuckgun that sent out a distress signal that the Skedar found and that's why they're on Earth in the first place. Dr. Carol was specifically designed from the start to ~crack the code~ of the megaweapon and bring it back into orbit (and test the gun on Earth), but he developed morals (and a desire to NOT destroy the Earth), prompting dataDyne to disassemble him, but Dr. Carol overheard this and called for help, resulting in the first mission.
Anyhow you convince the AI (Same one that you stole on the first level) to self destruct the entire compound, so you win. Yay. Should have been the end of the game but nooooooo...
He made that decision himself. Also, leaving loose ends all over the place is a bad idea.
Level 14: Velociraptors attack your HQ before you get to the White House, for some reason. Naturally you win, except, oh no, you get knocked unconscious and taken by the velociraptors RIGHT as you got them to escape!
They attacked the CI because the Skedar are fucking PISSED and they're rightly holding you responsible for their failed plan.
Level 15: You're literally on fucking space now on the most confusing level in the game.
The level is literally completely symmetrical. Get a strategy guide.
Elvis comes along and he's wearing a vest with the fucking US flag.
Yes, because of this:
(I found out from the wiki that apparently the little green men are gonna meet up with the President on the White House?)
Carrington even says this in the opening cutscene in level 14.
You are allowed to feel cheated once you realize it was ALWAYS a story about aliens.
Come on dude, really? I mean I can sort of understand what you're getting at but the whole OMG ALIENS thing is supposed to be a shocking twist. But even then, it was still hinted at. ----------------- All of this is covered in ingame mission briefing text and extra stuff in the hacker room and warehouse. Fun fact, Perfect Dark had no deadlines, which is why there's so much shit in it. Nintendo basically just said "release it whenever". The brilliant multiplayer mode started as an obligation after Goldeneye included a MP mode but they had so much extra time on their hands that it ballooned into what we have today. It was also likely due to this freedom that we have such a crazy plot. Honestly, I like it. It's a stereotypical wacky action sci fi movie from the 90s with cheesy voice acting and that's just the way I would want it. If that's not your bag then that's fine, but to call the story "terrible" because it's not explained to you in what I assume was a rushed Agent playthrough isn't really warranted imo.
I remember Perfect Dark Zero. Didn't feel the same as Perfect Dark. Here's my opinion on it. It does not hold up well today as it did in 2006. The multiplayer is what really made this game shine, but so few people play it nowadays. One of the gameplay mechanics is half implemented, the health mechanic to be precise. In the current game, health is magically regenerated (no slow regen, just immediate regen). I feel like that during development, someone (Microsoft, maybe) wanted that changed from no regen (like PD/Goldeneye) to that mechanic we see today. The movement is clunky, like everyone is moving through molasses. Kinda slow, in fact. The AI is terrible, they act like the Perfect Dark/Goldeneye counterparts, they shoot and chase you, that's it, and they're psychic too. I think the AI is bugged in some parts of the game, it's noticable in one of the boss fights (Mai-hem part 2, I think), where she constantly does a figure-8 without shooting Jo. Gunplay is alright though. It works likes it's supposed too. I can't complain about it. The story though, it's lackluster. I can't remember the story very well, because it's complete crap. Perfect Dark story is miles better than what Zero got.

I liked PD, well the plot is alright but I don't play many games for the plot anyway
Perfect Dark Zero is one of my guilty pleasures. I genuinely enjoy/enjoyed that game.
Perfect Dark Zero is one of my guilty pleasures. I have the Limited Collector's Edition of PDZ intact that I found in a pawn store for $5.00, since the game ended up in the massive amount of DVDs the store had.
