"RAMIREZ! GO COLLECT 8 PAGES IN THAT DARK FOREBODING FOREST!"
Please be something like Dark Corners of the Earth, that game was amazing.
Gah fucking flickery jumpy shit I am not prepared.
God I hope this is good. Dark Corners of the Earth was an underrated gem.
Unless the HPLHS were involved this is far from official.
this game's development is weird, it was originally being made by the guys who did those Sherlock Holmes games, then they handed it off to Cyanide so they could make a different but very similar Lovecraft game while Cyanide does this one
so now we're getting two Lovecraft games for the price of one
Huh, difficult to pull off. If i had to make a judgement based on this trailer (which is stupid to do to begin with), I'd say there is nothing that demonstrates that the material is handled particularly well. On the contrary, I don't think it would be a good choice to make the end of mankind the main threat like the narration suggests (which could have nothing to do with the actual game to begin with). It would actually be a sign of a tremendous failure to understand the central plot elements of Lovecraft's writing. Everything is centered about the protagonist and his perception of events, not some global threat that might bring about the end of the world. His stories work because we are right there with the main character, locked in his mind as he is being tormented with unfathomable terror and foreboding dread.
Then there is the monsters. Just the fact that there are generic "monster"-monster looking creatures is not a good sign to me. Most creatures in lovecraft lore are more of a shapeless embodiment of terror and the creatures he does describe in detail are incredibly intricate and creative, not some generic humanoid with a weird monster face slapped on.
But then again, the trailer is not much to go by. It doesn't even have gameplay and it might just be a result of marketing being dipshits. I did actually like Dark corners of the Earth, for different reasons. For starters, it showed that the devs had read enough stories to have a comprehensive understanding of the Lovecraft universe, enough to bring different elements together and to render them in pretty loving detail. It had awful gameplay and massive technical problems but it felt like something made by a fan of the short stories. Maybe this will too, who knows at this point...

Why would they need to be involved?

To make it as authentic and true to the source as possible.
Having them on board is a guarantee of the product being respectful of the source since they refuse to support anything that extensively changes the themes and meaning of whatever is being translated.
Since I can't see them anywhere near it, I'm less optimistic.

Even if they end up going off-rails in terms of theme, after all the best lovecraftian game - Amnesia The Dark Descent - isn't even based on Lovecrafts writing
Generally speaking it's REALLY been hard for movies and video games to really portray Lovecraft that well. We have attempted and references and "Lovecraftian Horror" but actually adapting Lovecraft's works itself is tricky.

The third act was altered to work better as movie but otherwise this is the gold standard of Lovecraft adaptation. Their silent Call of Cthulu film was also pretty spot-on.

I'd argue most Lovecraft-inspired media generally fails to encompass the core concepts of his work. Primary idea being how insignificant and microscopic humanity is on the cosmic scale.
Problem is that's an independent movie. I'm talking big AAA folks. Focus may not be as big, but they have a library of successful adventure games.
As a fan of lovecraft, i am screaming internally please be good.
I REALLY hope it's not another walking-simulator-horror game. If it was more like the first half of Dark Corners of the Earth, that'd be awesome.
That one part in the hotel in Dark Corners of the Earth still shits me up to this day and that's on top of the games great atmosphere, hoping we can get something nearing that.
Oh fuck me yes, Dark Corners of the Earth was so damn good. Please let this be as good.
Really hope they don't go down the generic horror game route, hopfully it's more like dark corners of the earth.

preferably without turning into a dumb corridor-shooter at the halfway mark

bloodborne has been one of the best portrayals of the "other worldly information of the gods-horrors that we aren't meant to understand" with lovecraftian horror I think (the monsters don't screw around either). It's pretty much built into the way you play the game too [sp] insight itself is a mechanic in the game for gameplay but also plays a part in the whole 'you understand and see more around you as you consume insight, things you wouldn't normally be able to understand or see. But you go mad, too' I think the best part about bloodborne is you don't expect it to have any kind of lovecraft horror in the beginning of the game; but then it slowly leaks in more and more[/sp]
But I totally agree with what you're saying about being hard to adapt actual lovecraft literature
developers made that Game of Thrones videogame.

Oh god please be good, the Cthulhu mythos has so much potential

Spoke too soon

Preferably. On one hand, having an alien lightning cannon is awesome, but on the other hand it's a little too "empowering" for a full-on Lovecraft experience. Then again, the Dunwich Horror ended with a bunch of investigators defeating an otherworldly hybrid horror and postponing the apocalypse.
But all in all, I think that stealth mechanics are very fitting for Lovecraft games. After all, if the unholy creature can't see you, it can't repurpose your face as a tea cozy. Though it can still horrify you by looking like something out of a madman's worst nightmares.
I hope this is good, I'm a sucker for Cthulu Mythos.

Does this have to do anything with that game ? The original was published by Bethesda and the dev studio was shut down, and the saddest part is they were working on a sequel to Dark Corners of the Earth.
who is the voice actor? dude sounds like master chief :v:
Dark Corners of the Earth did so many things right. As someone who has read all the stories i would say that Dark Corners is the game comes the closest to what i would think the stories would look like in "real life".
The soundtrack was fucking good as well
