We used to have a program at my school to go see people at the nursing home.
We were each assigned one elderly person to be teamed up with. I didn't even want to start doing it, but when I got to know him, he was one of the nicest...funniest guys I've ever met.
One day when we went back, he was gone. I asked the nurse where he was and she said "are you Alex?" I replied "yes, why?" she told me that one of the last things he said was "Where's Alex?"
he had gotten ALS, and I knew that he had it beforehand, but before the program ended, he passed away.
I attended his funeral though. It was frigging depressing though, one of the saddest things that's ever happened to me :(
