I never really got into open world games, with Minecraft I'd always get really bored at around five minutes and tunnel straight into the ground or build a dumpy square house and think "now what?". A friend of mine has spent hundreds of hours in Unturned but I always got incredibly bored at the gameplay. I do like freedom in games, but I prefer the Civilization/Age of Empires style of openness where you can plot your own course based on the game's systems or the Saints Row open city where you can figure out how to shoot your way through problems. Like, when I marathoned through the Metal Gear Solid serious I loved how MGS1 was designed around tight specific setpieces whereas the openness of MGSV felt empty and bland more often than not.
So the NMS reviews feel perfectly in line with what I suspected - cool visuals and lots of procedurally generated variety, but a lot of walking around big empty areas to do the same thing with 50 gazillion different coats of paint on it.
I really don't understand the "open world!!!" enthusiasm going on.
Minecraft at least allows you to build anything you can think of with its 1m-by-1m cubes. It gives you a nice goal to go out and explore. Such as "I need some more iron for this sick ass skull that's going on the front of my castle, better go find some". Plus Minecraft has some real nice claustrophobic natural tunnels and caves to survive in, with constant monsters and spooky darkness.
No Man's Sky just has well lit spacious caverns with random junk all over, and you build only what the game wants you to.
Also I still haven't seen a hostile enemy in No Man's Sky yet. Just random critters who only attack when you do.

I think that is a weird way of looking at it.
Many people obviously enjoy games where you aren't limited to following a hallway.
Open world games are kind of split into two as well.
- Games with an open world that has been specifically crafted (e.g. Skyrim, GTA, Metroid)
- Games with an open world that is procedurally generated (NMS, Minecraft, Starbound, etc.)
They are very different beasts, and as history shows they can both be done very well.
I'm gonna wait and see if they add anything major later on before I judge this game. If nothing gets added by the end of the year, then I'll be pissed.
I feel like the hate boner for this is kinda getting out of hand, I mean I'll definitely buy it because I know I'll enjoy it, but a lot of the people who are disappointed/didn't like the look of it in the first place seem to be going out of their way to try and spite everyone who actually might buy it or like it. (Nothing to do with Dunkey's opinion here I can see where he's coming from)

IMO it's dependant on whether you enjoy making things yourself. Same thing happens with people in garry's mod on sandbox, some people say "awesome, going to spend 30 hours building a robot man entirely out of broken cars and winches", and some people just try to shoot a few people and then quit when they realize FF is off.
I guess I'd call this a Slam Dunk! They had me at Rogueport.
But in all seriousness games that promise Molyneux levels of features and intricacy are always trouble. Hype cannot maintain a healthy game alone and not a moment occurred when I had genuine confidence that this game would even manage to cover half the ground it claimed too. All that players are given is a membranous line of wafer thin gameplay, and a heaving wallop of cosmetically different planets that promise only a deep, wading sea of further empty content and barren environments.
The devs should bail and rename it Padding: the Game. Just my opinion. They're talented people for sure, but the potential of meaningful, and seamless deep space is almost an untouchable concept in my eyes. At least at this point in time.

doesnt mean anything if its all procedurally generated, and people have already gotten near/to the middle already. the other 99% is gonna be the same as 1% if theres literally nothing meaningful found so far.

my thing is why would 18 quintillion planets impress me if I'm only going to be able to reasonably explore up to maybe 500 planets in my game time.
I've been hyped for this game forever but if the only real point to the game is exploring the same outposts 500 times and mining for the same materials without any real story or meaning or form of progression outside of upgrading your suit/guns/ship then it kinda rings hollow. I want exploring planets to ACTUALLY matter
Which, don't get me wrong I really like exploration games like Starbound, Minecraft, Dangerous Elite but if there's no ultimate purpose to exploring other than to explore, then why bother? Minecraft and Starbound have a general sense of purpose and progression (starbound is a bit iffy on the progression side). But odds are I'll probably end up buying it anyways, it's so gorgeous
Heck even Minecraft has 2^64 seeds. There's as many Minecraft words as NMS planets

You need to jump a few systems before you start to see that sort of shit. You start getting attacked by pirates in the space for you loot, and planets start having hostile eyebot scanner things that go after you eve if you ain't doing illegal shit.
I agree with this video saying there isn't really anything to do though. It's fun if you go into it knowing what it is and just want to dink around exploring, but the price tag and the hype behind it made people think the game is a lot more than it really is.
Is procedural generation like a color wheel in a way? Like say you take pure red being 255 and then you lower it to 254. That's a new color and it counts, but it's not drastically different from the last one. And then take 254 and change it to 253, etc.
Wouldn't it generate planets in a similar way? Like out of those quintillions of combinations, aren't there a lot that are just "the last planet generated but this type of animal is different"? Or am I just completely clueless about how it works :v:
